RSS flags a key issue ..... "illegal infiltrators live in West Bengal" .... obviously that's a matter of concern .... and also will turn a poll issue in 2026

The RSS has made a big remark on infiltration in Bengal.

Senior RSS functionary Sunil Ambeitkar said -- "illegal infiltrators live in Bengal. He also said that infiltrators have to be stopped. The law and order situation is not OK in Bengal".

The BJP on Sunday accused opposition leaders of running a campaign to protect infiltrators living in India as it cited comments of some of them to claim they were threatening it for raising the issue in states like West Bengal and Jharkhand.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed Jharkhand minister and Congress leader Irfan Ansari has said he will "dig the grave of the BJP" while attacking the party over the infiltrator issue.  Ansari later said that he was responding to the BJP's alleged projection of him and many other locals as Bangladeshi infiltrators.

TMC leader Abdur Rahim Boxi, -- Sambit Patra alleged, threatened to throw acid on the face of anyone raising the issue of infiltrators. He said the Calcutta High Court should take cognisance of the comments of the Malda district president of the state's ruling party and initiate action.

Infiltration especially of Bengali Muslims have been a key factor in 2021 assembly polls as well.

In fact, in little more than one year between 2019 and 2020, as many as 15 MLAs of Trinamool Congress, three of the CPI (M) and two belonging to the Congress had shifted support to the BJP.

Ironically, in 2016 polls, the BJP was hardly a factor in West Bengal state assembly elections.

It had only seven MLAs of its own in the 294-strong state assembly polls in 2016. I

However,  in 2019 Lok Sabha polls – when BJP showed significant improvement in mass support, the Lotus party’s Lok Sabha tally went up to 18 --- a quantum leap from modest 2 in 2014.

Of course, Mamata Banerjee has been a strong leader in her own right in the state and is known for opposing Modi.

In 2021 assembly polls, while Leftists and Congress were left marginalised with no MLA in the assembly -- the Trinamool however retained power though Mamata Banerjee had herself lost to Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram.

As we further analyse latest political developments in West Bengal, it goes without saying that in 2019 general elections, Ms Banerjee had been one of the chief contenders to Prime Minister's post – from so called ‘sickular’ brand of polity! Of course, it was altogether a different chapter that Mr Modi did well outsmarting all detractors and returned to power with a bang.

In 2024 parliamentary - some mistakes could costly and the BJP's strength in Lok Sabha from West Bengal nosedived from 18 to 10.

BJP leaders including party chief J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah often camaaign in Bengal stating ----

"Give one chance to Narendra Modi. We will make 'Sonar Bangla' in five years".

The fact of the matter is very few Bengalis (Hindus) can actually dispute the spirit of the BJP's campaign on law and order situation and regular influx of Muslim voters.

For Hindus and other non-Hindu communities - Jains, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians - the Govt had CAA in 2019 and in 2024 the illegal infiltration was a key issue.

But every time electoral mandate will not justify the prevalence of  genuineness of an issue.

But in 2025 and 2026 - influx of Bengali influx and the Trinamool leaders helping them 'turn into voters' is being debated.

Nor any Bengali worth his salt will say he or she does not dream of Sonar Bangla -- as envisioned by the BJP.

Among many places Bankura has been identified as a key place or region of BJP's election campaign.

At one point, it was understood that in Medinipur and other parts of Junglemahal -- the BJP performance would be spectacular.

Looking back, Suvendu had first resigned from the Mamata cabinet on November 27, 2020 and then from the party on December 16. His supporters - calling themselves 'Dada's foot soldiers' - had promised a political storm - fiercer than the Cyclone Amphan to sweep across West Bengal.

The Nandigram success for BJP or for Suvendu Adhikari was a case in point.

The BJP for 2026 polls also wants --- favourable outcome in at least 40 assembly segments in Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, parts of Birbhum -- all in the Naxal infested Junglemahal region.
