"History is being made in Haryana .....the BJP government for the third time. If you (Rahul Gandhi) try to defame the country on the global stage, this is what happens. The people of the state have once again delivered a blow to the false narrative with their votes," says BJP leader Radhika Khera.
Prophets of doom have been proved wrong. Exit Polls and ivory tower expertise too got it on the nose. The BJP now set to form its own government for the third term in a row.
The Ahirwal region, spanning Gurgaon, Rewari and Mahendergarh, in Haryana has largely remained loyal to the BJP since 2014.
On election trends, BJP MP Arun Singh says, "Under the leadership of PM Modi, BJP is forming the government in Haryana for the third time. The workers are very happy. People have expressed confidence in the development work done by BJP".
Moditva triumph after Lok Sabha polls is crucial |
With the Jats disenchanted with the BJP in Haryana, the party had significantly banked on the Ahirwal belt in the southern part of the state to form its governments in 2014 and 2019.
In the Lok Sabha polls, held just four months ago, the BJP dominated in 10 out of the 11 Assembly segments across Gurugram, Rohtak and Bhiwani-Mahendergarh.
Among the most prominent leaders of the Ahirwal region is Gurgaon BJP MP and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh. With Rao Inderjit Singh winning a sixth term as MP earlier this year, he led the party from the front in the region and most of his loyalists received tickets, including his daughter Aarti Rao.
The Ahirwal region in south Haryana consists of four Lok Sabha seats -- Gurgaon, Rewari, Faridabad and Bhiwani-Mahendergarh. It translates to 28 Assembly seats out of the total 90 seats. More than 60 per cent of the voters reside in urban areas.
In 2024 Haryana polls, regional outfits including Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), AAP (though never a big force in Haryana) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), were not seen making a mark.
INLD, BSP and JJP led only on one seat each.
The early trends of the Haryana Assembly elections have turned out to be a thriller, with BJP making big gains.
When counting started at 8 a.m., the Congress took a modest lead over the ruling party but within two hours of counting, the BJP took a decisive lead over the Opposition party.
This election was crucial for BJP and the Congress in more ways than one.
The Election Commission (EC) data also showed the BJP surging ahead of its rival and crossing the halfway mark. Till this report was filed, the BJP has managed a lead in about 50 seats out of the 90-member Assembly. The majority mark is 46.
But for Rahul Gandhi, the results of Haryana battle would have serious impact. In 2024 Lok Sabha, he did well to almost double the Congress tally from 53 to 99. This was his major win especially in the context of Lok Sabha polls and direct confrontation with Narendra Modi.
Otherwise from 2014, Rahul has been at the receiving end and whenever Modi or BJP suffered electorally in some states - the loss was to regional satraps like Bihar's Nitish Kumar in 2015 and Mamata Banerjee in 2021 in West Bengal. But honeymoon period of June 4 (results of general elections) is practically over.
In broad sense, there are two-camps within the Congress - one the Bhupinder Singh Hooda camp and the other Randeep Singh Surjewala and Kumari Selja camp. But as the proverbial wheels within wheels; there are camps within camps.
One got the glimpse of a clear division in the so-called perceived Surjewala-Kumari Selja camp in Narwana belt.
The infighting working against Congress was predicted in a previous blog last month.

BJP National spokesperson, Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi says, " If Jairam Ramesh has already started saying this and pointing fingers at Election Commission, then we should understand that they have accepted their defeat...as per the trends going on, I feel that we are moving towards an important victory and Congress has started taking precautionary measures for their future defeat"
