Mamata Banerjee's protest politics might have turned out Tatas from Bengal....it might have harmed Left; but it left a permanent scar on West Bengal

"One of his biggest battles (by Ratan Tata) was against Mamata and her Trinamul Congress that had whipped up a storm over the Nano small car project that the Tatas intended to establish in Singur," says edit in 'The Telegraph' - Kolkata-based English daily that is otherwise wedded to Sickularism and has often chosen to ignore the lapses of Mamata regime !!

The piece also says: "It is hard to deconstruct Ratan Tata’s life: he was a man who broke with convention and journeyed down a road that opened a box of paradoxes."

Modi sent him SMS - "Welcome to Gujarat" !!

Controversies clung to him and he never backed down from a fight.

One of his biggest battles was against Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress that had whipped up a storm over the Nano small car project that the Tatas intended to establish in Singur.

He was bitter when he was forced to move it out to Sanand in Gujarat. He resolved never to return to Bengal and often took potshots at the state. -- runs the piece.

'aapa' of negativity and Muslim appeasement !!

"Trinamool Congress is proud that they stalled industry in Singur...,"
the Prime Minister told a massive election rally at Tarekeshwar near Singur in 2021.

Adopting a new style in his campaign, Mr Modi exuded confidence of BJP forming government in West Bengal
after May 2 and counseled state government officials in locations where elections are already over to start
preparing a list of farmer beneficiaries who will get the financial assistance from his party-led dispensation.

"If the BJP comes to power in Bengal, I shall come for the oath taking ceremony and ask the Chief Minister
to give approval to the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi at the first cabinet meeting," the Prime Minister told an election rally
Tarakeswar about 25 km from Singur in Hooghly district.

Notably, Singur, the epitome of Trinamool's anti-industry agitation falls under this district.

"Passing on the benefits to farmers will be the first job of our BJP government," he said. The Prime Minister was
also critical of the manner Mamata Banerjee had opposed the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi which was launched by
his government in 2019.

"After May 2 we will not only have a double engine government, even the farmers will get double benefit," he said.

Of course, people get the government they deserve and hence Mamata Banerjee returned to power even as she was herself defeated in Nandigram.

More on Flashback

Srijan Bhattacharya, 27 was a significant name in 2021. Within hours of his name being announced for the all-important Singur seat, Bhattacharya posted on Facebook, “Krishi amader bhitti, shilpo amader bhobishoyt. (Agriculture is our foundation, industry our future)”.

It is enormously significant because this was the slogan coined by Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who had invited the Tatas to set up their Nano factory at Singur.

The controversy over land acquisition and Mamata’s dogged opposition to the Tata factory played a huge part in the fall of the 34-year-old Left rule in Bengal in 2011.

The Supreme Court in 2016 declared that land acquisition in Singur by the Left front government was illegal.

Singur's sitting MLA - 80-year-old Rabindranath Bhattacharya, a prominent face of the Singur movement, also had joined the saffron party.
