Determined to bring in Peace in strife-torn Manipur, Home Ministry to meet Meitei, Kuki & Naga MLAs

Legislators from Meitei, Kuki and Naga communities in Manipur to hold crucial parleys in Delhi on Tuesday, Oct 15  


For the  first time since the eruption of the clashes between Kukis and Meiteis in Manipur, MLAs from the three communities will be holding talks with the centre.





The talk is being hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the direct supervision of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Notably, for the first time, Kuki and Meitei MLAs/Ministers would be talking face to face since May 2023 following Centre’s serious efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two estranged communities.

Some of the Meitei MLAs/Ministers who would take part in the talk are Thongam Biswajit, Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata, Thounaojam Basantakumar, Khongbantabam Ibomcha, Dr Sapam Ranjan, Thokchom Radhe-shyam and Tongbram Robindro, reports said.

The Kuki community will be represented by Letpao Haokip, Paolienlal Haokip, Haokholet Kipgen and a few others.

Naga MLAs/Ministers namely; Awangbow New-mai, L Dikho and Ram Muivah will also take part in the talk.  

Speaker Th Satyabrata and Thanga legislator Tongbram Robindro have already reached Delhi.








Meanwhile, some of the MLAs/Ministers who would take part in the  talk scheduled on October 15 at New Delhi held a meeting with Chief Minister N Biren this evening, the sources added.   


AK Mishra, Advisor (North East), Ministry of Home affairs, the Manipur govt representatives and the United Naga Council (UNC) office bearers also have met in the national capital on Oct 11 over the issue of formation of new districts in 2016.  


Earlier too, the centre had tried to reach out to two warring communities Kukis and Meiteis to find an amicable solution to the respective grievances.  


Union Home Minister Amit Shah held extensive meetings with CSOs of all three communities during his visit to Manipur as well as in Delhi since May 2023. 


Moreover, various key agencies had persistent back channel talks with CSOs of both the communities. Representatives from various influential organisations such as COTU, Kuki Inpi, HTC, ITLF, Zomi Council, Zo United, Joint Philanthropic Organisation, ATSUM, etc from Kuki-Zo side and COCOMI, AMUCO, UCM, Meira Paibis, FOCS, Meitei intellectuals, etc from Meitei side were persuaded at various levels to see reasons.

Back channel contacts with MLAs/Ministers of both communities and joint meeting of few MLAs from both sides was also held.

Some of these efforts were result-oriented as the intensity of violence was checked and minimised, there was recovery of weapons, opening of Highways, rescue of abducted persons were also carried out. 

Burial of mortal remains was another vital step.
