BJP fields local Mahila Morcha leader Navya Haridas for Wayanad bypoll against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi

The Congress is keen to make all out efforts to present a thumping victory to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in her electoral debut especially after a surprising and stunning defeat in Haryana assembly polls.

Election in Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency has been necessitated after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who had won seats in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, decided to retain the latter.

The BJP now has decided to field its local leader Ms Navya Haridas for the by-election in Kerala's politically sensitive segment Wayanad where she will contest against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Navya Haridas is the Kerala unit general secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha. She is a two-time councilor in Kozhikode Corporation and saffron party leader in the corporation.

She was also the NDA candidate for Kozhikode South constituency in the last Assembly election held in 2021. There will be a triangular contest in Wayanad as the Communist Party of India (CPI) has named senior leader Sathyan Mokeri as the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate.

In 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi was able to retain his Lok Sabha seat (of 2014) by polling 647,445 votes. This was 59.69 percent of votes but it recorded about 5 per cent drop in his vote share in the constituency.

CPI nominee Annie Raja had polled 283,023 votes while BJP's K. Surendran had bagged 141,045 votes.

Mrs Vadra, who is making her electoral debut, will be accompanied by her brother and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala is planning a major road show at Kalpetta town in Wayanad to formally receive Priyanka as candidate.

Wayanad had witnessed major road shows when Rahul came down to file nomination in 2019.

CPI candidate Mokeri is a former MLA from the Nadapuram constituency in Kozhikode district and is popular for his work addressing issues in the agricultural sector.

The BJP on Saturday also released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly election. Former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) turncoats Champai Soren and Sita Soren are among the 66 candidates named by the party.

Babulal Marandi will contest polls from Dhanwar seat, while Champai Soren is set to represent Saraikela. BJP's nominee from Jamtara will be Sita Soren.
