"... There are persecuted minorities in some of our neighbouring countries- Buddhists, Christians, Jains, Hindus, Sikhs, among others... In 1947, the population of Hindus in Pakistan was 24% which stands at 1% today. In erstwhile East Pakistan, there was a certain Hindu population but now there are just 7%.
Some of these people who came to India before 2014 are being given a right," says Union Minister and former diplomat Hardeep Singh Puri.
"The people who are suddenly worried that these few immigrants will take away all jobs and resources need to know that our population is 140 crores and only 1000 people have registered on the portal so far. The number of people who had applied for citizenship under the Citizenship Act of 1955 is also just 4000.
"What is this completely distorted picture which is being presented? This is not about religion. It does not cover Sri Lankan Tamils and Rohingyas. These are well-documented cases of persecuted minorities in these countries- Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, among others.
"It (CAA) was designed to deal with a specific issue... India is a humanitarian country. We have followed certain principles...", he said.
This is Modi's crucial polls; and Namo is planning everything -- negotiations with new regional satraps, tickets distribution and necessary political spin and narrative
To any student of politics and political science, Narendra Modi has always presented himself as a SERIOUS student and a workaholic !!
Party insiders say for the battle of 2024 Namo is now taking charge of everything and .... "every little" points of negotiations with new regional satraps such as N Chandrababu Naidu, Naveen Patnaik or in the decision to change Chief Minister in Haryana Manoharlal Khattar -- also his friend.
Modi is involved in ticket distribution to poll and campaign strategy planning.
"Jahan logon ki sochna khatam hoti hae, wahan unka sochna shuru hoti hae (Where people reach dead end in their thinking and planning; there Modi begins to think)," said a key saffron party insider. Well, if you are thinking -- the result of 2024 battle will be for everyone to see -- the man in debate himself thinks so !!
His die hard fans and distinct critics will have to admit that Modi has in the last 10 years and more astonished his critics and admirers. His works including in governance and policy making including foreign policy so far --- has been revolving around three pillars - Triumphant, Imaginative and Brilliance.
If he got two historic mandate in 2014 and 2019 -- nothing is stopping him from sweating it out to achieve another bigger milestone.
Otherwise he has an image of a ruthless operator -- a man who does not forget -- "bhool ta nahi" as they put it. But when it comes to negotiations with stalwarts like N Chandrababu Naidu, Modi has almost vetoed his party colleagues not to raise "uncomfortable" matters.
The TDP is a former ally which has 'returned' to the NDA.
Not long ago during the peak of 2019 election campaign, Naidu had said ".....my brothers from the minority community present here should take note..... If you vote for Modi, many problems will arise".
Sources say that some BJP leaders reminded Naidu about such remarks; but the Prime Minster insisted that such issues including personal attacks made against Namo should not come in the way of a successful deal in Andhra Pradesh.
And now everyone is happy that the TDP-BJP combine will do extremely well in Andhra Pradesh -- where BJP's score so far has been zero.
In Odisha, the Modi government has ensured cordial relations with the BJD and especially its leader Naveen Patnaik.
In 2009 with L K Advani at the helm and journalist-turned-neta Chandan Mitra negotiating, Naveen Patnaik had snapped his party’s ties with the BJP.
Reportedly, the issue also was anti-Christian violence. The BJD had offered 6 of 21 Lok Sabha seats in the state to the BJP -- which the saffron party had rejected. And see the change, now Naveen is likely to concede 14 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP is also agreeing to give BJD an overwhelming upper hand in the Assembly polls. In 2019, BJP had won 8 seats and even former BJD lawmaker Jay Panda (Bijayan) had joined the Lotus party.
In Tamil Nadu, as per Modi's clear instructions, the BJP has not yet given up on its former ally AIADMK.
At the same time, BJP had stitched alliances with smaller parties and key social groups in the state. The DMK is facing anti incumbency and as the AIADMK is now much weaker. there are chances there will be a pleasant miracle in Tamil Nadu for the BJP in terms of seats and not merely the vote share.
For Bihar also, it was Modi's personal push that ultimately Nitish Kumar and his JD-U with the vital caste factor is back in the NDA ranks. In 2019, the BJP-JD(U) alliance had sweapt 39 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats.
