In terms of governance; the major highlight in Narendra Modi's first year as the Prime Minister was the launch of ‘Make in India’ campaign on September 25, 2014.
In the words of the Modi, “The biggest requirement is trust, confidence. I don’t know how we have run our country that we have doubted our own countrymen at every turn. I need to change this vicious cycle. We should not start from distrust, we should begin with trust”. And then he added on rather aptly: “The government should intervene only if there’s some shortcomings”.

Modi and Merkel, German chancellor promoting 'Make In India' |
The Make in India initiative was designed to provide impetus for employment, growth and necessary skill enhancement to convert India into a global manufacturing hub. Initially twenty five sectors of the economy were proposed to be targeted with exponential increase in a gradual process.
The 'Make in India’ initiative was actually seen as a judicious mix of economic prudence, administrative reforms and thus catering to the call of people’s mandate – an aspiring India.
Looking back one can say, Modi's aggressive and yet highly necessary push to revive the nation's ailing manufacturing sector found resonance in the domestic industry but across the globe and amongst NRIs
The series of measures taken by the Government to improve the economic situation and convert the disruption caused by COVID 19 into an opportunity for growth includes Atmanirbhar packages, introduction of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme in various Ministries, investment opportunities under National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) and National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), India Industrial Land Bank (IILB), Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS), soft launch of the National Single Window System (NSWS), etc.
In addition, Government of India is developing various Industrial Corridor Projects as part of National Industrial Corridor Programme which is aimed at development of greenfield industrial regions/nodes which can compete with the best manufacturing and investment destinations in the world. GoI has accorded approval for development of 11 Industrial corridors (32 projects) in four Phases. Under Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) Project, 04 greenfield industrial nodes have been developed under Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).
Further, PM GatiShakti National Master Plan provides a transformative approach for ensuring multimodal connectivity to various economic zones. Minimizing disruptions, ensuring quick completion of works with cost efficiency are the guiding principles for the development of infrastructure as per the National Master Plan. Boost in economic growth, attracting investments and enhancement of country’s global competitiveness, are some of the expected outcomes.
The reforms taken by Government have resulted in increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in the country. FDI inflows in India stood at US $ 45.15 billion in 2014-2015 and have continuously increased since then, and India registered its highest ever annual FDI inflow of US$ 81.97 billion (provisional figures) in the financial year 2020-21.
Keeping in view India’s vision of becoming ‘Atmanirbhar’ and to enhance India’s Manufacturing capabilities and Exports, an outlay of INR 1.97 lakh crore (over US$ 26 billion) has been announced in Union Budget 2021-22 for PLI schemes for 14 key sectors of manufacturing, starting from fiscal year (FY) 2021-22. With the announcement of PLI Schemes, significant creation of production, skills, employment, economic growth and exports is expected over the next five years and more.
The activities under the Make in India initiative are also being undertaken by several Central Government Ministries/ Departments and various State Governments. Ministries formulate action plans, programmes, schemes and policies for the sectors being dealt by them, while States also have their own Schemes for attracting investments.

Putin, Zelenskyy invite PM Modi to Russia and Ukraine after Lok Sabha polls

Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin invited PM Modi to their respective countries after the Lok Sabha elections are over.
Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday spoke to Presidents of Russia and Ukraine, reiterating India's commitment to peace amid the ongoing war between the two countries.
Both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin invited PM Modi to their respective countries after the Lok Sabha elections, sources said.
In a post on X, PM Modi said he spoke to Putin and congratulated him on his re-election as Russia's President. "We agreed to work together to further deepen and expand India-Russia Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership in the years ahead," PM Modi said.
In another post, Modi said he spoke to Zelenskyy on strengthening the India-Ukraine partnership.
"Conveyed India’s consistent support for all efforts for peace and bringing an early end to the ongoing conflict. India will continue to provide humanitarian assistance guided by our people-centric approach," PM Modi said.
In response, Zelenskyy said, "I spoke with Prime Minister @NarendraModi to express gratitude for India's support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, humanitarian aid, and active participation in Peace Formula meetings. It will be important for us to see India attend the inaugural Peace Summit, which is currently being prepared in Switzerland."
"We discussed the development of our bilateral relations, which should include a meeting of our teams and a session of the intergovernmental commission on cooperation in New Delhi in the nearest future," he added.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is interested in strengthening trade and economic ties with India, particularly in "agricultural exports, aviation cooperation, and pharmaceutical and industrial product trade".
He also said that Kyiv wishes to welcome Indian students back to Ukrainian educational institutions.
The government airlifted students back to India after war broke out in Ukraine in February 2022.
Modi is seeking his third consecutive term in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The seven-phase elections will take place from April 19 to June 1. Results will be declared on June 4.
India has maintained a strategic neutrality over the war despite the global outcry over Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
While India has abstained from several UN votes criticising Putin's actions, New Delhi has not shied away from expressing its discomfort with the situation. It declined Russia's request for support in a Security Council resolution on Ukraine and condemned the atrocities against Ukrainian civilians in Bucha, calling for an international investigation.
The Prime Minister in a meeting with President Putin, emphasised in 2022 that "today’s era is not the era of war," a sentiment later echoed by the G20 summit communique in 2023 in Delhi.
