Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former state cabinet minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has been chosen for appointment as the new Chief Minister of Manipur.
Manipur is under President's rule for nearly a year now.
The post of chief minister has been vacant ever since N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025 amid a prolonged period of ethnic violence in the state between Meiteis and Kukis.
Khemchand Singh's name as the next CM of Manipur was announced on Tuesday after he was elected as the legislature party leader of the Manipur BJP, following a meeting held in New Delhi.
The BJP's present strength in the 60-member Manipur Assembly stands at 37. Initially, 32 candidates of the 'saffron party' were elected in the 2022 Assembly polls. Meanwhile, the JD(U) had won six seats.
However, out of those half-dozen, five later defected to the BJP. Moreover, one seat in the state legislature fell vacant following the death of a serving MLA.
WHO IS YUMNAM KHEMCHAND SINGH?
Khemchand Singh, who belongs to the Meitei community, is a two-time MLA. He was elected from the Singjamei Assembly seat for two back-to-back terms, in 2017 and then in 2022.
He rose to prominence in March 2017, when he was elected as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. He held the post for a full five-year term.
Following the 2022 Assembly elections, Singh was inducted into the second Biren Singh cabinet as a minister. The leader was entrusted with several portfolios, including Rural development and panchayati raj, municipal administration, housing development, and education.
