*MJA decides Against Coverage of Republic Day 2026 Celebrations*
The Mizoram Journalists Association (MJA) on Monday, Jan 26th, resolved not to publish news related to the Republic Day celebrations held at Aizawl and other district headquarters.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of its Executive Committee in the state capital.
In an official statement, the MJA highlighted that press enclosures or galleries had been arranged during previous Republic Day parade and Independence Day functions in recognition of the media’s role.
However, information received from officials at the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office indicated that no such arrangements had been made for the 2026 Republic Day celebrations at Aizawl Lammual.
The Association stated that this was later verified at the venue, where several media personnel were compelled to return home before the programme commenced due to the absence of reserved seating for the media.
The statement further pointed out several irregularities in the organisation of the 2026 Republic Day celebrations, including inaccuracies in the invitations issued for the Governor’s ‘At Home’ reception.
One member of the MJA said - "There was no invitation for Governor's At Home by name. They simply dumped few invitation letters at the press club. This was hardly the way to invite people".
Expressing concern over the lapse, the MJA stated that it does not wish to see a recurrence of such incidents in the future. The MJA urged government officials to ensure that proper press enclosures or galleries are arranged at all National day celebrations, underscoring the importance of the media in public events.
