Chingwang as 'inspiration' - this time as Independent MP of 1980

Naga Voters may back Independent candidate with Bolero symbol

New Delhi

Indian politics is on a fast track. Thanks to God Ram and his temple.

Less than a week, post-Ram Mandir inauguration, - three wickets down in top batting order in the Opposition alliance. Mamata Banerjee is going solo in West Bengal, which has 42 seats and sizable Muslim population.

In Punjab with 13 seats, the AAP of Arvind Kejriwal has shut the door to Rahul Gandhi's Congress and now in Bihar - that has 40 seats - the JD(U) is reportedly making a 'Ghar wapsi' to the embrace of Narendra Modi's BJP.

What happens to Nagaland in the meantime?

Either NDPP's score sheet in the next Lok Sabha will be zero -- because the ticket may be 'snatched' away from Chingwang Konyak-led outfit.

'Nagaland Page'

A BJP man called Nalin Kohli, with "close friendship" to NDPP bosses was reprimanded in Guwahati by BJP general secretary B L Santhosh last year when he wanted to seal the deal in favour of the regional party.

Santhosh's message was clear, "Nothing has been finalised and till any decision is taken BJP may contest Nagaland seat".

The second proposition is the BJP is possibly keen to get Temjen Imna Along as MP owing to his Twitter-friendly politics and right connections in Nagpur city.

Amid all these come some figments of journalistic imagination; and hence this ought to be mischievous.

When Desk persons in 'Nagaland Page' asked me to elaborate on my 'idea'; my humble response was:

"If I were a Naga politician, I would contest Lok Sabha poll as an Independent with Bolero as the symbol".

It's basket case !

A few thousands votes are bound to come and Kohima's top supplier of Bolero will be in the worst kind of predicament --whether to send me a Bolero or Scorpio.

But the 'imaginative suggestion' is not a mere joke to be taken lightly as we have the illustration of Chingwang Konyak.

Contesting as an Independent candidate Chingwang had humbled a sitting UDF MP, Ms Rano Shaiza in 1980 polls.

Chingwang had polled 145,969 votes making 51.01 percent as against Rano Shaiza polling 140,210 (48.99 percent).

Of course, those were NNO days and the official entry of Congress in Nagaland was only in 1982.

Yet again. the Congress is at crossroads. In 2018 and 2023, the Congress party could not open account in the state assembly. Likes of K Therieh have made space for youngsters. The party got double dosage of 'demoralisation' -- first December 2023 assembly polls in MP, Rajasthan and Chhtattisgarh and then the Ram temple inauguration.

For Rahul Gandhi's Nyay Yatra, Nagaland was simply a passing phase and photo opportunities.

Narendra Modi is basking at the reflected glories of Temple politics. In these situations, Nagaland voters can make a big political statement by defeating the BJP-NDPP candidate.

The message will go directly to PM Modi  and he will soon realise the blunder he and his Home Minister Amit Shah have committed by 'outsourcing' the Naga talks to Himanta Biswa Sarma and his most trusted resourceful friends.

When people write about politics, it is generally said, those in power will continue with their greed, but the onus is on the faceless voters.

It's time for people to expose the notorious conspiracy. And that can be done best by humbling the 'sarkari' candidate -- whosoever it be (either from the BJP or the NDPP). On ground, options are limited before the voters. As political parties, the Congress, the  AAP, LJP (Ram Bilas), NCP, NPF and RPI (Athawale) are unable to fight against Chingwang-Rio duo.

Some of these parties are keen only to be like state-sponsored NGOs. AAP and Congress have their own tales of inexperience, organsational weaknesses and total absence of excitement/enthusiasm from party workers and voters.

This brings one to the relevance of an Independent candidate and yes, the symbol Bolero is bound to go down well too.
