PM Narendra Modi on Monday, Feb 5, lashed out at the Opposition parties for what he said trying to 'glorify and defend even the proven corrupt' leaders.
"Choro ka Mahima Mandan..."
"Where do you want to take the country...even for cases where punishment has been meted and the guilt/crime has been established...." - he said in Lok Sabha replying to the debate on President's customary address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament.
"You (referring to corruption-accused opposition leaders) will have to return the money you plundered. I will not allow the country to be cheated..." he continued.
"Jo saza kaat chukey haen, jo saza kaat rahen (You are defending and glorifying even those who have been proven guilty - those who have faced the punishment or those who are facing, you are glorifying them...What kind of inspiration you want to give to the coming generation....," - PM said.
What's your compulsion??? -- he questioned the opposition members.
"It's a national tragedy today.... There was a time even a boy in a class room was caught copying from others.... he would also hide his face for 10 days. But today even those who have been proven guilty of corruption.
Those who have been in jail and are out on parole ... such 'chor (thieves)' are being glorified in public life".
"The world is influenced by India. G20 summit is a testament to this. In our third term...India will be the third largest economy in the world and this is Modi's Guarantee"
PM Narendra Modi defended President's address in Parliament and slammed the Opposition by asking if women, farmers and fishermen were not minorities for them. Several Opposition leaders had criticised President Murmu's address to joint sitting of Parliament.
"Maybe fishermen are not from the minority in your place, maybe animal herders are not from the minority in your place, maybe farmers are not from the minority in your place, maybe women are not from the minority in your place.
"Kab tak Samaj ko baat te rahogey"
What has happened to you? How long will you keep thinking about divisions? How long will you keep dividing the society?" the Prime Minister asked.
Several Opposition leaders voiced criticism regarding President Droupadi Murmu's recent address to the joint sitting of Parliament before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge describing her speech as a 'propaganda' and 'advertisement' of the Modi government.
Modi countered stating the Opposition has failed to fulfill their responsibility as the Opposition. "I have always said the country needs a good Opposition," he added.
PM hit out at rival parties and politicians facing corruption allegations, and thundered a warning to his rivals, declaring, "Whoever looted the country will have to pay".
Modi's sharp comments - in his speech on the eve of general elections - come as opposition politicians face corruption cases a result of action by central agencies, such as the Enforcement Directorate; the most recent example is former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
"Agencies are taking action against corruption and there is outrage over it... Ten years ago in our Parliament, there were discussions on scams and the House demanded action every time. (But) today, when action is being taken against the corrupt, some people oppose it?" Mr Modi asked.
