After Mizoram, Nagaland Dy. CM Patton expresses reservations on Free Regime Movement ::::: Busy brothers, blood brothers :::: Zhaleo Rio's "expensive beggars" remark may be loaded !!

Expressing strong opposition to the border fencing proposal, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland, Y. Patton, has asserted that sealing the borders along Myanmar will goes against the wishes of the Naga people. He highlighted the complex living arrangements of the Naga people, with many Nagas residing on the Myanmar side of the border.

Patton stressed that the Nagas would never accept any proposal for border fencing, and he underlined the unity of the Nagas and the Mizos on this matter. Patton shared his ideas with newly installed Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Laldudoma during their meeting in Aizawl.  Both the leaders also discussed about matters related to the development of the North East states.

Patton gifted the Mizoram Chief Minister traditional Naga attire, weapons, and costumes. The Chief Minister’s wife, Pi Liansailovi, was also present.

It may be mentioned here that Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, also a BJP leader, has made a strong pitch for the scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the fencing of the Myanmar border to address security issues and safeguard the interests of indigenous Manipuri people.

Biren Singh also raised concerns about the neglect of the northeastern state by previous union governments, citing the 390-km border with Myanmar as a focal point. He partly attributed the ethnic violence between the Metei and Kuki-Zo tribes in May 2023, which resulted in the loss of 175 lives, to this neglect.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio's brother Zhaleo's "expensive beggars" remark may not be out of the blue

New Delhi

"It's not enough to be busy, so are the ants," - thus spake the American essayist Henry David Thoreau.

This is the age of Artificial Intelligence; but often we want to be 'intellectually Artificial' as well. Politicians across the globe are known for this. They speak...either in double meaning like Punjabi jokes; or they speak half-heartedly.

Speak out Nagaland;...do it more candidly.

NPF leader Kuzholuzo Azo Nienu says New Delhi is to be blamed for delay in inking the Naga peace pact. So said the sitting Lok Labha MP Tokheho Yepthomi.

But there was a little difference. Tokheho is in the NDPP and he made a veiled attack on the NDPP-BJP dispensation but Azo is in NPF and technically can afford to be critical of Chief Minister Rio. However, he did not.

Well, after veteran Shurhozelie vetoed Azo's elevation as NPF president; Chingwang Konyak party has reportedly lost interest in Azo. The Cock and the Globe merger story is not happening as of now and Rio can't be declared the 'tallest regionalist'.

Of course, Rio hails from the Congress school of politics - once identified with power-game and now in an era of struggles ensuring its own significance.

Rio was perhaps once a very towering regionalist between 2003 and 2014; but he lost the title once he went to Delhi as the Lok Sabha MP.

Today he is back, but he is also unofficial protector of the saffron party's interests and guardian to some BJP leaders in Nagaland. For his part, Rio himself is banking a lot on Amit Shah's mood, Himanta Biswa Sarma's help and his own fate.

These mixed talks from Azo and Tokheho make a lot of sense and those tracking Nagaland may get more opportunities to analyse and make things simpler for readers.

CM Neiphiu Rio

There was another interesting rhetoric session when Chief Minister's brother Zhaleo said there are "expensive beggars" in Nagaland. Well, who knows better than the 'sponsors' and his own brother Neiphiu Rio leads the pack who have been playing the benevolent ruler.

But the sarcasm is such that 'expensive beggars' are across India these days including in New Delhi.

Zhaleo's remarks were thus half told. What about 'very expensive beggars' his brother Rio or even A K Mishra may know. What happens to the Nagaland economy when expensive beggars are from outside Nagaland and from Delhi, Myanmar, Guwahati and elsewhere?

Zhaleo can have a session separately with bro CM on this.

Brotherhood matters always. In Delhi, politics is now mingled with Ramayana. Dr S Jaishankar, India's suave foreign minister, says every Ram needs a Lakshman. Wags say Modi's diplomacy needs France and Emanuel Macron as 'Lakshman' to India.

A brother who can cool your angry temper or can tell you, well I am here, every crisis can be handled.

In Nagaland context, we may say every Vizol needs a Vamuzo, every Lohe needs a K V Pusa and so on.

'Fighting Cock' Vamuzo

PM Modi also needs an Amit Shah. If things are boiling, Himanta may not help beyond a point. Before he retires, Nagaland CM may not give up his office; but he too will need an Amit Shah or an Emanuel Macron.
