Sounding poll bugle in Madhya Pradesh, PM Modi pitches for Uniform Civil Code

Sounding the poll bugle in Madhya Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, June 27 made a strong pitch for Uniform Civil Code in the country.

“You tell me, in a home, how can there be one law for one member and another law for another member?” Modi said interacting with BJP workers at a function organised under party’s ‘Mera Booth Sabse Majboot’ campaign.

“Will that home be able to function? Then how will the country be able to function with such a dual (legal) system? We have to remember that even in India’s Constitution, there is a mention of equal rights for all.” Even the Supreme Court has advocated for a UCC, he pointed out.

He also termed the mega conclave of Opposition parties in Patna last Friday to stitch an anti-BJP alliance for 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a mere “photo-op”.

Modi further said that those supporting ‘triple talaq’ were doing a grave injustice to Muslim daughters and that Pasmanda Muslims, who are backward, are not even treated as equals because of vote bank politics.

Modi asserted that BJP has decided it would not adopt the path of appeasement and vote bank politics, adding that the policy of appeasement practised by some is “disastrous” for the country.

The UCC will override personal laws of different religions, but those practicing vote bank politics are opposing it, Modi said.

Opposition parties including the Congress hit out at Modi for raising issues like UCC only to divert attention from the real issues of unemployment, price rise and Manipur violence.

Uniform Civil Code refers to a set of overarching laws that apply to everyone in the country and replaces religion-based personal laws, rules of inheritance, adoption and succession.

Modi further hit out against those supporting ‘triple talaq’, saying that the practice was abolished even in Pakistan.

“Whoever speaks in favour of triple talaq are hungry for votebank and are doing injustice with the Muslim daughters, their parents, brothers.  If it was connected to Islam then it would not be stopped by any Muslim dominated country. Muslim dominated countries have also abolished the practice of triple talaq. I was in Egypt the day before yesterday. It has over 90 percent Sunni population and about 90 years ago, they abolished the practice of triple talaq,” he said.

“If triple talaq is an important aspect of Islam, then why is it not practiced in Pakistan, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Bangladesh? These are all Muslim countries that have abolished it.”

Triple talaq is a noose put around Muslim daughters by the people who want to snatch their liberty away and this is the reason the Muslim daughters stand with BJP, he said. “Muslim of India have to understand which political party is trying to misguide Muslims and use them,” the PM added.

Votebank politics has spoiled the lives of the Pasmanda Muslims but nobody wants to talk about it, he said, about the plight of the most marginalised section of Indian Muslims.

“The Pasmanda Muslim community till today does not live in equality, they are backwards. …. They are backward and face discrimination. The damage of this discrimination is faced by multiple generations but the BJP is working with the intention of ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas’. They are getting benefits of the Ayushman Bharat and the PM Awas Yojna which our workers will go and explain to them,” Modi said.
