Sudershan Reddy's tally shows cracks in Opposition
NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan was on Tuesday, Sept 9th, elected 14th Vice President of India.
The votes polled by Reddy show that there was considerable cross-voting from Opposition MPs. This despite the fact that the numbers were in Radhakrishnan's favour much before the election.
After ballots were cast, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed Reddy would get 315 votes.
But Reddy finally got was 15 less -- that is 300 only.
A RSS man and an OBC, Radhakrishnan polled 452 of the total 767 votes, while former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy could bag only 300 votes.
Out of 788 eligible MPs, 767 exercised their franchise in the Vice Presidential election necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on health grounds although there are speculation about other 'political considerations' behind his move.
The turnout of MPs to vote for Vice Presidential polls marked a turnout of 98.2 per cent.
As many as 752 votes were valid and 15 were invalid, Returning Officer P C Mody announced in a press conference.
Thirteen MPs abstained from voting, including seven from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), one from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and one independent MP.
The election comes 50 days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post on July 21 in a surprising move during the first day of the Monsoon Session, citing health reasons.
A two-time Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore during then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, Radhakrishnan, 68, was projected as an experienced and untainted leader suited to preside over the Rajya Sabha, where he will serve as the Chairman of the Upper House.
He belongs to the Gounder-Kongu Vellalar OBC community.
