Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk had a controversial role in the entire episode. The violence in Ladakh was unwarranted. But is not without good raason that the gory episode was orchestrated by a section of local elements and supported by external hands.
The Centre has now cancelled the foreign funding license of Sonam Wangchuk's NGO.
The centre has alleged norms violations in getting foreign funds including irregular deposits, local funds in FCRA account, and foreign funding for sovereignty studies. The specialty or significance of Ladakh violence is that it has happened in a border province with China.
Earlier such chaotic games were tried in Delhi and university campuses and also in the north involving farmers.
- There were violent protest against CAA in 2019.
- It transformed into Shaheen Bagh protest.
This time Wangchuk has already called it a Gen Z protest. This is the flavour of the season especially in the context of unprecedented violent-driven change of regime in Nepal.
The scale of the violence was high and aggressive.
Mobs indulging in arson and clashes left four people dead and at least 80 injured, including 40 police personnel. Protesters attacked the BJP office, the Hill Council headquarters, and set vehicles ablaze before police and paramilitary forces used tear gas to restore order.
Looking back at Wangchuk's NGO - one major violation is the manner Swedish money was routed.
The NGO had received Rs 4,93,205 from the Swedish organisation Framtidsjorden for educational programmes on issues including “migration, climate change, food security, and sovereignty.”
The Union Home Ministry is clear - “The Foreign Contribution cannot be accepted for study on Sovereignty of the nation. This act of the association is against the national interest of the country in violation of section 12(4)(f)(ii) of the Act.”
Wangchuk's Gen Z remarks on the violence coincides with Rahul Gandhi's remarks only a few days back.
BJP's Amit Malviya upped the ante on Wangchuk and the Congress and said:
"It is clear that Sonam Wangchuk and Congress, propped up by foreign agencies in this sensitive border region, are attempting to engineer unrest for narrow political gains". Malviya also said that Rahul Gandhi's "sinister" plan ought to be exposed.
