Masood Azhar's family 'torn into pieces' by India: Jaish admits Op Sindoor impact

"Azhar's family had been "torn into pieces" in the May 7 attack on Jaish headquarters – Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur"

This is the first public confirmation from within the Jaish-e-Mohammad regarding the fate of Masood Azhar's family after India hit the terror outfit's headquarters in Bahwalpur.

In a video that has gone viral, a top Jaish commander, Masood Ilyas Kashmiri, flanked by security personnel, is seen acknowledging the losses suffered by the terror outfit.

"After sacrificing everything, on May 7, Maulana Masood Azhar's family was torn apart by Indian forces in Bahawalpur," Kashmiri said.

THE BAHAWALPUR STRIKE

The operation was launched in retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 25 tourists dead. Apart from Bahawalpur, eight other terror sites were reduced to rubble as India conducted its most daring airstrike deep inside Pakistan.

In the strike on Bahawalpur, the 12th largest city in Pakistan located 400 km from Lahore, 10 of Azhar's relatives were among those killed.

It included his sister, her husband, his nephew, his niece and children from his extended family. Four of Azhar's aides were also killed in the pre-dawn attack.

Satellite images showed heavy damage to one of the domes of the mosque and extensive destruction inside.

While Pakistan never acknowledged the fact, eyewitnesses and foreign media reports said state funerals were held in May for Azhar's family members. Azhar, who has rarely been seen in public, also made a brief appearance and left the venue within minutes.

WHERE IS MASOOD AZHAR   ?

A UN-proscribed terrorist, Azhar has been the mastermind of major terror attacks in India, including the 2016 Pathankot strike and the 2019 Pulwama attack, which left 44 soldiers dead.

Background note :::

In 1999 was Kathmandu-New Delhi aircraft was hijacked ....

Masood Azhar was the general secretary of Harakat-ul-Mujahideen (HUM).

He hails from Bahawalpur in Pakistan, entered the state of Jammu & Kashmir in India in January 1994 on a false Portuguese passport and was arrested by the Indian police the following month because of his involvement in terrorist activities.

There have been several earlier attempts by the HUM to secure the release of Masood Azhar by resorting to abduction as a bargaining tool.

Two British nationals were kidnapped on June 6, 1994 at Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir.  Another group of three Britishers and one American was abducted in Delhi in September the same year.  Six foreign tourists, including two American nationals, were kidnapped again at Pahalgam in July 1995.

One of the hostages, John Childs (a citizen of the USA) escaped, another (a Norwegian national) was beheaded by the Harakat, and four others, including an American national, are still missing.

The Dec 24, 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines aircraft was the most brazen terrorist attempt yet by the HUM to secure the release of its general secretary Masood Azhar.

He later floated Jaish-e-Mohammad.
