"Kali Maa has adopted me and I am working in public life with a vow to serve Lucknow throughout my life,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in Lucknow on Saturday.
Rajnath Singh's words are not only well measured. They are generally well thought of.
Rajnath Singh : Making a vital point
Goddess Kali is considered a fierce form of Durga and is deeply connected to power, empowerment/Shakti, and the feminine divine. So when a veteran leader says something - there could be multiple meanings, hints and these are also subjected to numerous interpretation.
One simple message maybe - Rajnath Singh (born 1951) is still has more than a year to be 75.
The age-mark 75 is the talk of the town. Mohan Bhagwat has expedited the discussion on this matter ever since he counseled that Netas should retire at the age of 75 and step aside making way for younger generation.
The RSS chief himself is reaching 75 years milestone on Sept 11th. So more than making a hint towards the BJP leadership or Prime Minister himself; is he doing a soul searching himself ?
If Bhagwat quits as the RSS chief this September; an argument may be floated that Narendra Modi should also hang up boots on or after September 17th - the Prime Minister's birthday.
Bhagwat and Modi -- Not quite the best 'jugal bandi'
The women empowerment is the flavour of the season and probably the BJP will get a female President in 2025. The RSS - a typical Brahmin dominated male bastion - will be left not doing much. Because in circa 2025 - none can be seen as anti-woman. To try Sanjay Joshi - if grapevine has merits - become next BJP chief was something of a mission impossible on the part of the Sanghparivar fountainhead.
Modi and Sanjay Joshi have big time differences from the days Namo was in Gujarat and on one occasion the then Gujarat Chief Minister had declined to campaign for the BJP because Sanjay Joshi was then running the show there.
Moreover, Sanjay Joshi's temporary exit from the frontbencher BJP leaders was triggered in 2005 Mumbai National Executive meet of the Lotus party over a CD controversy.
Modi and Amit Shah : Jugal bandi at its best
If 'women empowerment' is the flavour of the season, this is not without good reason.
Hence, the feminine power may also come to the rescue for Modi-Shah team as they want a new party chief who may not and will not create problems for the duo.
Manohor Khattar, former Haryana CM and now Union Power Minister, would have easily walked away with the trophy had not the RSS and especially Mohan Bhagwat play up a good Sangh nominee for the BJP presidentship.
All these have also led to speculation that perhaps Mohan Bhagwat is himself under pressure with the Sanghparivar fountainhead and he could be replaced sooner than later. Bhagwat's exit for whatever reasons could kick off media debates on Modi's age too; but as is clearly known there is no hard and fast rule about the retirement age of a Neta.
In the west, they say Politicians never retire.
Many in India have believed so till the last stage. Hence, pro-Namo Team and ecosystem will always say Modi has a superb health condition. Moreover, Vanaprastha (retirement) as discussed in a previous blog (see link below) is always voluntary. So the refrain will be the individual concerned has to look for his own time and day of retirement in public life.
The seventy five years issue could not have figured in political discussions if not Modi himself cleverly used it to marginalise past veterans such as his mentor L K Advani, another former BJP chief M M Joshi and former foreign minister and Vajpayee's 'Man for all seasons' Jaswant Singh.
Advani and M M Joshi - 'Age margialised them'
But that does not mean Modi also has to adhere to such unwritten rule.
Hence - if Bhagwat retires after September 11th and if BJP gets a woman president; there would not be mush difficult for Mod to contest and lead the BJP and NDA once again for 2029 general elections.
In the past fortune favoured Narendra Modi in more ways than. The most glaring example of a blessed luck is the immense weakness of the Congress party.
Who knows - he may laugh it out yet again. Had there been likes of Pranab Mukherjee or even 'indecisive' P V Narasimha Rao stewarding grand old party; the battle would have been more exciting.
