PM Modi to skip UN General Assembly as the timing beginning Sept 19 coincides with Spl session of Parliament

The high-level General Debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly will begin on September 19. Brazil will be first speaker of the session, followed by the US.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give it a miss and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar will address the high-level week.

However,  Modi will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia on 6-7th September 2023 at the invitation of Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia. During his visit, the Prime Minister will attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and 18th East Asia Summit being hosted by Indonesia as current Chair of ASEAN.

In fact, the UNGA high-level week will begin just days after the G20 Leaders' Summit in New Delhi taking place on September 9-10 under India’s Presidency.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to address the high-level session on the first day of the General Debate. Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will address on September 23.

The 78th session of the General Assembly will commence on September 5. During the high-level week, world leaders will convene for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit, the Climate Ambitions Summit and the General Debate.

The 2023 SDG Summit will take place on September 18-19. It will mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals with high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to 2030.

Notably, the forthcoming ASEAN-India Summit will be the first Summit since the elevation of India-ASEAN relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022.

The Summit will review the progress of India-ASEAN relations and chart the future direction of co-operation.

The East Asia Summit would provide an opportunity for Leaders of ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to exchange views on issues of regional and global significance, an MEA release said.
