Now anecdotes, criticism and some comments:

A silent social transformation is underway in contemporary India. - blogger in a 2021 article

"The second wave of Covid-19 has come as a forewarning for India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The spiraling cases and deaths across cities and towns, making India currently the world’s worst pandemic-affected country, have now apparently silenced Modi’s cheerleaders and diehard admirers.
His critics are already predicting doomsday. Many have gone vocal demanding the prime minister's resignation. On social media and in general discussions, the refrain is that the limit of good governance under Modi has been reached."

"Opposition parties miss the opportunity to take down a prime minister beset by crises" -- article on Sept 28, 2020

Left to the party's propaganda spin masters and a huge army of Modi admirers — mostly Hindu voters — the expectation from Modi is still humongous.

On social media, the hashtag 'ModiHaeTohMumkinhae' (With Modi around, everything seems possible) is a big hit among his support base. An independent survey in August found that while 40 percent of those surveyed described him as a “good” prime minister, an additional 38 percent said Modi's performance has been “outstanding.”

Obviously on the ground, things couldn’t be more different. The middle class and poor are allegedly the direct victims of some of his policies, starting from his few corporate-friendly moves, demonetisation and a uniform tax structure.

It is like the “juvenile state of capitalist exploitation,” says senior Marxist leader Prakash Karat.

"It is the working class and the working people who are going to bear the brunt of the economic and social consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has laid bare the actual conditions of the working class — through the migrant worker crisis,” Karat said.

"Many Indians are astonished that the coronavirus crisis, compounded with an economic slowdown and joblessness, is perhaps not yet the biggest challenge threatening Modi’s leadership.

In contrast, Modi has used the crisis to reinforce his political position and offer himself to the people as a strong Hindu leader in a country with about one billion Hindus in a population of 1.35 billion.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the federal government's spin doctors are hyperactive in claiming a positive performance for the government. And what suits the official gambit is that there is still no big challenge to Modi from opposition parties despite the challenges facing the government.

Modi's calculated gamble in playing his time-tested pro-Hindutva and often anti-Muslim cards has only endeared him to Hindu voters." -- blogger in an article
