BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj says:
"JNU dismissed Congress MP Bimol Akoijam on October 9 over allegations of sexual misconduct. Eleven female students had lodged complaints of sexual harassment against him... and an internal committee at JNU removed him from his duties...".
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) sacked its professor and Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur, Bimol Akoijam, after holding him guilty of sexually harassing female students.
The dismissal, ordered with immediate effect, was based on the findings of the university's Internal Committee (IC), which recommended a "major punishment" against him.
"It is alleged that he engaged in inappropriate physical contact with female students at JNU and would summon them to his residence late at night under the pretext of academic evaluation...".
Criticising Congress party, she said: "It seems that for the Congress, feminism begins with a hashtag and ends when it comes to accountability."
"It is surprising that the Congress high command—be it Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, or Sonia Gandhi—has not uttered a single word on this..."," Ms Bansuri Swaraj said.
The order signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Santishree D. Pandit said an internal probe had been conducted against the academic from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences.
"An inquiry was conducted by the Internal Committee (IC) against Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, pursuant to allegations of sexual harassment. Based on the findings, the Internal Committee (IC) recommended a major punishment to Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam," the order read.
"Upon following due process and considering all available facts, and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the university is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences of the university, with immediate effect," it added.
Bansuri Swaraj also said: "It appears a competition of anarchy is emerging between Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi—whether it is the Aam Aadmi Party or the Congress party, the voters of this nation have rejected both. Having failed to secure power through the popular mandate, they are now seeking excuses for their defeat..."
