"Bharat apne kisano ke hitton ke saath ..... kabhi bhi samjhauta nahi karega" :::: Namo is firm - "India will never compromise the interest of its farmers" .... a day after 50 % Trump Tariff

PM Modi's stern message to Trump: We will pay any price to protect our farmers

"I know I will have to pay a heavy price for it personally, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks were seen as a direct response to US President Donald Trump, who slapped a 50 per cent tariff on India for its continued purchases of Russian oil.

"For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority.... India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers," the Prime Minister said.

New Delhi has given a number of "concessions" to Washington, including no tariffs on industrial goods, and a phased reduction of tariffs on cars and alcohol.

It also signed a deal to let Elon Musk's Starlink start operations in India. But the US is not impressed.

Its focus is on reducing the $45bn trade deficit with India.  Hence it wants access to India's agriculture and dairy sectors.

Speaking at the M S Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, PM Modi made it clear that he would continue to stand by the country's farmers and bear the brunt of America's steepest tariffs.

The US move is widely seen as a direct punishment for India’s refusal to toe the US line on buying Russian oil and military equipment, a sore point that has strained a strategic relationship that was on the up and up.

The Prime Minister's defiant tone came after Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, pushing the total duty to a staggering 50 per cent, the highest the US has imposed on any country.

The Ministry of External Affairs has called the US tariffs "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", and vowed to "take all actions necessary to protect its national interests".

It also called out Washington's double standards in singling it out for Russian oil imports while continuing to buy Russian uranium hexafluoride, palladium and fertiliser.

The tariff hike also reflects growing frustration in Washington over stalled bilateral trade deal negotiations, which broke down after New Delhi refused to cede ground on agricultural market access and digital trade rules.

Trump's tariff offensive has plunged US-India ties to their lowest point in recent years. It has also raised concerns among exporters and industry leaders on both sides. Analysts warn the tariffs could hurt key Indian sectors including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods—all major contributors to India’s exports.

The initial 25 percent duty came into effect today, August 7, while the second round will hit in 21 days,

On PM Modi's "India will never compromise on the interests of farmers," Dr Anupam Varma, Senior Agriculture Scientist, says, "PM Modi is giving 100% correct message, not only to the country but to the world. The interest of the farmers is primary for us...

We cannot compromise on the interests of the farmers. PM is absolutely right."

Addressing a public rally on Saturday, Modi took a defiant stance against Trump’s tariff assaults.

“The world economy is going through many apprehensions. There is an atmosphere of instability,” Modi said.

“Now, whatever we buy, there should be only one scale: we will buy those things which have been made by the sweat of an Indian,” he added.

Modi’s comments came as India also rejected rump's demand for 'stopping'  buying of Russian crude.

MEA also said:

“We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports (of Russian oil) are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India".
