Russian President Putin briefs PM Narendra Modi on Trump meet

"Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska," the Prime Minister tweeted.

He stated: "India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard.

I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come."

INDIA WELCOMED TRUMP-PUTIN MEET IN ALASKA

India had on Saturday welcomed the Alaska meeting between Russian President Donald Trump and US President Vladimir Putin, calling their leadership "highly commendable" in the pursuit of peace.

“India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

“India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the statement added.

The high-profile Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded Friday without an agreement to end or pause the war in Ukraine, the deadliest conflict in Europe since 1945, now in its fourth year.

India has been otherwise enjoying the developments in Alaska. Apparently Trump suffered a setback as no peace deal was agreed upon.

Donald Trump gave the meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin full marks on Saturday, while putting the ball in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s court.

“Now, it’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done. And I would also say the European nations, they have to get involved a little — but it’s up to President Zelenskyy,” Trump said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet on Monday, thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for calling him up and sharing insights on his meeting with US President Donald Trump. Both the leaders met in Alaska on August 15.
