Trump picks loyalist Sergio Gor as US ambassador to India, calls him great friend
Trump appointed Sergio Gor, White House personnel director, as ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs.
“I am pleased to announce that I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India, and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“Sergio and his team have hired nearly 4,000 America First Patriots across every Department of our Federal Government in RECORD time — Our Departments and Agencies are over 95% filled!”
Gor, who co-founded Winning Team Publishing with Donald Trump Jr., has been deeply involved in the Trump family’s projects, from publishing two of the president’s books to running one of the largest Super PACs supporting Trump’s campaigns.
Taking to his official X account, Gor, 38, said it will be the "honour of my life to represent the United States".
"Beyond grateful to Donald Trump for his incredible trust and confidence in nominating me to be his next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs! Nothing has made me prouder than to serve the American people through the GREAT work of this Administration!
Our White House has achieved historic results in MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! It will be the honour of my life to represent the United States," he said.
US Vice President JD Vance said Mr Gor is a "great guy" and will "make a fantastic ambassador" to India.
"So much of our success over the last few months was due to Sergio's hard work. I'm grateful to POTUS for giving him this new role," he wrote on X.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also endorsed Mr Gor, saying he would be an "excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world."
The nomination comes amid Trump imposing a 50 per cent tariff on India, including 25 per cent as a penalty for buying Russian oil. According to experts, the Indo-US bilateral relations have suffered immensely due to whimsical style of functioning of the US President.
Now whether appointment of a Man Friday is meant to do some damage control in that respect remains to be seen.
The Trump's approach towards India has actually helped cement ties between India, Russia and China and thus the RIC factor may harm the greater American interests.
Analyst Fareed Zakaria has said recently that spoiling India-US trust by Trump is the biggest strategic mistake of his second term so far.
"Even if Trump reverses course, the damage is done. India believes America has shown its true colours.
It's unreliable, its willingness to be brutal to those whom it calls its friends. India will feel that it needs to hedge its bets. Stay close to Russia and make amends with China," Zakaria said.
