At least 10 gunmen were killed along the India-Myanmar border in Chandel district of Manipur. The operation was carried on by Assam Rifles in coordination with the Spears Corps.
Locals say the PDF gunmen were perhaps like "village police" in Myanmar.
Reports say the deceased militants were on PDF uniform and -- that suggests all those killed were from Myanmar.
The People's Defence Force (PDF) is the armed wing of the National Unity Government (NUG) in Myanmar. It was floated in response to the February 2021 coup.
The PDF was established on May 5, 2021, to "protect" civilians from the military junta and as a step towards a federal union. The PDF is reportedly funded through community and diaspora donations and community contributions.
Manipur experienced worst of ethnic violence for months starting May 3rd, 2023.
The state was placed under President's Rule in February when BJP Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped aside after some ruling party raised the flag of revolt against him.
Of course, everyone believes that peace and normal can be returned in Manipur only through emutual community level understanding, empathy, dialogue, and inclusive governance.
However, the security apparatus sometimes recommend tough measures as necessary evil to restore order.
Acting on specific intelligence on movement of armed cadres nearby New Samtal village, Khengjoy Tehsil in Chandel istrict of Manipur, the Assam Rifles launched an operation on May 14, 2025 and executed as many as 10 cadres.
"During the operation, the troops were fired upon by suspected cadres to which they quickly reacted, redeployed and retaliated in a calibrated and measured manner. In the ensuing firefight 10 cadres were neutralized and a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition have been recovered," a source said.
The area has long been a hotspot for cross-border militant activity. Militants from various communities and groups exploit the "difficult terrain" and weak security links for safe passage.
In 2024, the government announced sealing of the India-Myanmar border provoking strong reactions from local communities especially in Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland.

Visuals and reports from the site showed automatic rifles, ammunition, and tactical gear seized by security forces.
