Had 'Operation Sindoor' type any mega operation happened when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Opposition leader or even a lawmaker; the former Prime Minister would have made use of the occasion and offered himself to serve national and future interests of India.
He would have told the government of the day -- here I am, please take my service in the interests of our country.
By default or otherwise Shashi Tharoor has got that opportunity. Even other opposition MPs deserve kudos for availing the opportunities. Either you are leading the delegation or not would not matter. The message they will carry will matter.
Look what Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) lawmaker from Kerala E T Basheer says:
"It was cruel on the part of Pakistan (Pahalgam attack). We have categorically said that Pakistan is doing that every now and then. Loss of life of 26 people is most tragic". Actually, Pakistan should see this.
We often say Maturity lies not in getting angry or escalating an armed conflict. But the true maturity is in the control of the terms of engagement.
Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee did a smart thing and this 'outreach' may ultimately help Abhishek Banerjee score some creditable points.
Former cricketer Yusuf Pathan did not understand either the importance of diplomacy and the gravity of politics. He could have gone if he wanted to.
These teams have been selected by government and there was no compulsion for anyone to take dictation from respective parties on this.
Rahul Gandhi missed a golden opportunity.
This is what happens when hatred for someone blurs all your vision. This is too much of smallness of politics - the 'occhepan (someone would say in Hindi) and it is also unstatesman-like.
"The central aim of the multiparty delegations to various countries is to strengthen India’s international relations and reinforce its stance against terrorism in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, by showcasing our diversity and plurality against a military-theocratic state that supports proxy wars and kills innocents," what a statesman of maturity has come from a Marxist lawmaker John Brittas.
The communists may have several negative traits; but in this case - he has been smart and matured.
Some tricky and complex things of politics and geo-strategies have been underlined well in a statement from a former former foreign secretary Nirupoma Rao.
"Strategic maturity lies in letting others claim headlines while securing outcomes".
How true - Donald Trump and Rahul Gandhi focused on headlines and
Narendra Modi and the likes of John Brittas and Shashi Tharoor have displayed that maturity.
I particularly applaud DMK leader Kanimozhi's sensibilities as her party, her family and she herself hardly can have a good and smooth relationship at least for the time being.
Kanmozhi will be leading the delegation to Russia and other countries.
Ms Rao has articulated it so well.
"Ultimately, this is not a moment of collapse but one of recalibration. India is confronting a new strategic geometry: Crises are triangular, platforms are shared, and narratives are contested as much as borders.
"The US will remain a tempering actor, but not an arbiter of truth. China will remain a silent catalyst. Pakistan, emboldened by both, will remain a spoiler.
India’s task is to respond when needed, restrain when possible, and reinforce its role as a power whose stability is not defined by others’ volatility."
IUML leader Basheer also said:
India categorically told at that time itself that we will react...It was really a provocation from Pakistan, so we fought. We were very strong in the war and we gave a befitting reply to them. India maintained decency, to not disturb civilians. On the other hand, Pakistan was doing all kinds of wrong-doings. So, we will expose these kinds of things...We are representing the nation...It is a very good experience...".
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj says, "The terrorist attack in Pahalgam was done on the honour of India. It was a blow to the soul of India. PM Modi and our armed forces have given a befitting reply to this, through #OperationSindoor. Operation Sindoor is a new pledge of justice.
PM has made it very clear that terror and talks can't go together, blood and water won't flow together, trade and terror will not happen together; whenever India would hold talks, it will be over PoK. With the sense of Nation First, cutting across party lines, this all-party delegation is going...We will present India's position before these nations...".
