Tokenism is often an unimportant element in something very important.
This may be misleading. Tokenism is actually considered a harmful and superficial gesture that undermines genuine diversity.
President Ao Sneden said:
"History will judge us not by titles but by the legacy we leave behind".
Two analogies may drive us to a different analogy !!
(a) Metaphysics as they say is not a science as we understand physics and chemistry.
The Ungma declaration says:
"This declaration is a covenant, not a mere procedural outcome.
The peoples’ collective voice has decisively chosen to rise above fragmentation and division, embracing forgiveness and healing, to honor the sacrifices of past generations, and to walk together toward a future defined by dignity, justice, and peace.
The unity expressed today is based on a firm conviction, forged in the fire of shared suffering and sustained by the hope of collective flourishing.
.... Therefore, today we confess and declare that Nagas are one. God be our help!
(Does it help New Delhi to make forward movement is still uncertain)
(b) Human being should be always afraid of failure.
But it may be strictly a very particular kind of failure .... A Failure that follows a very particular kind of Success.
New Delhi often goes through such a stage when it comes to understanding the complexities and different layers of Naga peace negotiations.
Confusion ? No. Delhi is now used to these.
Hence as the Ungma Reconciliation meet was on in an urban village in Mokokchung district of Nagaland -- New Delhi mandarins were neither anxious nor excited.
"Let's see what comes out" -- was the morning roll out at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
To be honest, Metaphysics grapples with some of the most profound and timeless questions about existence, such as:
What is reality? What does it mean for something to exist? What is the nature of space and time? Do abstract concepts, like numbers, exist in the same way that physical objects do?
Practically at the end of the day -- all these came up looking for answers and went down -- as usual - without providing any answer.
"We are neither poorer ...nor richer .... as another day passed off," came a casual remark who was quizzed by journalists on the developments related to Naga talks.
Instead Delhi's babudom has a set of more fundamental questions. Each of these make a better sense --
What does Chief Minister of Nagaland want?
What does NDPP-BJP regime want? Is NDPP merging with NPF or the other way round? Will the 'rooster' go crowing ?
These are questions in parts. But were thrown out all at one go !!
The hyped gathering at the invitation of Ao Sneden and under the guidance of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) had some good attendance no doubt.
The NNPG led by old war horse N Kitovi Zhimomi stayed away. The argument being - "we do not want to meet someone either who said it is dangerous to sit with us".
The reference is August 3 statement from NSCN-IM chairman Q Tuccu. Initially, the NSCN-IM also said they will not attend. Later in a major embarrassment for the chairman himself, the militant group had agreed to respect public pressure.
Theory writers in Delhi collected a few feedback from their on fields men and women in Dimapur, Kohima, Guwahati and other places.
One refrain was the NSCN-IM could not say 'No' to the Ao region as "handsome funds" are collected from this area.
It was said by one mandarin -- Aos virtually threatened that if their requests go unheeded they will not "cooperate in cash and kind in future".
Another radical view was non-Tangkhuls wanted to have a greater say.
But as things turned out -- in the ultimate this was not true either. No NSCN-IM big shots turned up for the deliberations.
In the media circles -- some suggestions were made about possible headlines --
"Underground status quo club buckles under public pressure".
This also seemed far from reality.
To put a rather bitter question - another theory was circulated -- "When will overground status quo club follow suit ?"
This actually makes lot of sense and it is good that New Delhi is starting to realise the importance of asking these questions.
Importantly, as these questions were asked -- there was also whispering about Amit Shah's Article 130th Amendment.
Another mischief remark was both - India's Prime Minister and his Home Minister are unpredictable.
