Sikkim's new 'political baby' the Citizen Action Party highlights fault line in women safety and defective policy that encourages commercialisation of education

The politics of Sikkim is on the boil lately.

Surprisingly not the BJP or the Congress nor even the state's ruling party Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM),Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is on the move.

It's rather a party of generally considered Young Turks the Citizen Action Party (CAP) that is on move.

A select team of office bearers and CAP footsoldiers are on a visit to New Delhi and has been interacting with all kinds of political and non-political people.

"There are  multiple issues of mega concern about Sikkim, the governance in the state and the politics. But as a family man; I am most concerned about the poor state of education and commercialisation of such a holy space.

We have 32 assembly seats... and we also have 27 private universities. We have different kinds of corruption and different kinds of extortion,"  says party's national coordinator Pobin Hang Subba.

"We are not in Delhi on any political mission .... rather we see this as an interactive exercise so that we know Delhi better and you all know Sikkim and the politics of Sikkim better," he says.

Fielding questions Subba also said:

"Some questions were expected ... as you are asking about organic farming and community issues and so on. To start with I will say the so-called Organic farm story is over. It's like an age old painful part of the story. We are also magicians... money comes and money vanishes," he maintained declining to elaborate further.

He said a Central Executive Council (CEC) Meeting of the party was held at Melli Dara presided over by president Ganesh K Rai and a resolution was adopted that the Sikkim Govt establish clear regulatory mechanisms to ensure that only credible and quality institutions operate in the state.

To a question, he said :: "Unlike the past when Gangtok used to record zero percent crime .... these days we have increased number of  crime against women".

This issue also figured prominently at the party's CEC meeting.

And the Resolution said:

"Recognizing the alarming increase in violence against women and the lack of effective government action, the CAP–Sikkim resolves to stand firmly against all forms of violence and to advocate for stronger preventive and legal measures to protect women in Sikkim".

The party also expressed deep concern over the longstanding poor condition of NH-10 — the lifeline connecting Sikkim with the rest of India.

The CAP–Sikkim urged both state and central authorities to take immediate and effective action, emphasizing that persistent neglect of this issue adversely affects Sikkim’s economy and development.

The party extended support for the Business Community and Economic Policy Reform and highlighted the need for economic revitalization.

The CAP–Sikkim resolved to work closely with the business community and advocated for fair, growth-oriented policies to ensure economic prosperity for all sections of the society.

Sources also said the CAP president Ganesh K Rai in his address highlighted the relevance of the resolutions adopted at the meeting.

To take the party to a greater height, he urged the cadres to make optimum efforts to implement and execute the resolutions in the interest of the people of Sikkim.

The party leader Subba said : "The Citizen Action Party–Sikkim is committed to building a transparent, responsive, and reform-driven governance model."
