(Is Delhi ka Laddu linked to some parts of Maharashtra too ? )
Eminent leaders from northeastern region got together in New Delhi and addressed a press conference on Nov 4th, 2025 to make an announcement of "coming together of various voices of our region to form a
.... united singular political entity".
Hence, it was just a first and elementary step only.
How much political mileage they are able to draw by such a meet with the national media in Delhi still remains a puzzle. In all probability; there is still a tussle whether they should become one political party or just a front.
So far .. the best word they could manage is 'singular political entity'.
Naga leader M Lotha, Conrad and Pradyot from Tripura
Notably, Mizoram's Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) of chief minster Lalduhoma --- a practical politician is not part of this so far. The ZPM would have been a big catch because ZPM is not part of the NDA ether.
Less than a month after its landslide victory in the polls to the Bodoland Territorial Council, the BPF formally joined the NDA recently following a call from the BJP and personal persuasion of Himanta Biswa Sarma.
From Assam, parties such as Asom Gana Parishad, the BJP's junior partner in the state, is also not part of the proposed entity. From Nagaland - the NPF under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is also still part of the NDA and hence far off theoretically and politically from the proposed move.
A 'joint statement' signed by these leaders -- Conrad K. Sangma, CM Meghalaya & President, National People's Party (NPP), Mmhonlumo Kikon, a former BJP Minister from Nagaland, Pradyot Bikram Manikya, Founder, TIPRA Motha Party of Tripura and Daniel Langthasa, People's Party, Assam says --
"... leaders from different states of the North East, have come together today to make a collective and historic announcement i.e. the coming together of various voices of our region to form a united singular political entity that truly represents the aspirations of our people."
It said: "For too long, we, the younger generation leaders of North East, have spoken about the same issues and concerns of our people, but from different platforms and political spaces.
We have realised that our strength lies in unity, and that it is time to give our people one collective voice. Taking inspiration from the vision and legacy of great leaders who fought selflessly for the identity and development of our land, we have resolved to carry forward their ideals by coming together under a shared vision for the future of the North East."
"Today's announcement marks the first step towards building this common platform. To take this initiative forward, we have decided to constitute a committee that will deliberate on the future course of action, including the modalities and structure of the proposed political entity.
Our united effort is guided by a simple conviction that the people of the North East deserve to be heard, respected, and represented through a strong, unified, and indigenous political voice at the national level," the statement said.
A committee has been constituted to oversee the 'merger process'. So they are not yet ruling out launching of a new party.
The committee headed by Conrad's brother and NPP leader James Sangma will work over the next 45 days to finalise the structure of the unified entity. Another operative part was Conrad Sangma's observation:
"For too long we have spoken about the same issues but from different platforms and political spaces. Our strength lies in unity .... and it is time to give our people one collective voice."
However, such lofty and idealistic words have been spoken in the past too.
In 2014 - both Neiphiu Rio and Late P A Sanmga tried to present a united face of the north east MPs but as they hailed from different parties including the BJP and the Congress --- no such unity was possible.
Even during cabinet formation; PM Narendra Modi ignored both veteran Sangma and Rio and instead reposed much trust in Kiren Rijiju, a lawmaker from Arunachal Pradesh. His plus points were -- he won on BJP ticket and he is very good in Hindi and did not have the 'high legacy' of P A Sangma.
A non-Christian, Rijiju was first MoS Home between 2014 and 2019 and since then is a cabinet minister. He was also a Law Minister from 2021 and later in 2024 he became Paliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister.
Sadly, but true -- the new proposed move of a new entity for northeast has all the ingredients of "minus points" about polity as highlighted by Congress leader Shash Tharoor recently.
There is Dynasty; - Sangmas and Prodyot himself. Even the convener of a special committee is Conrad's own brother.
By blood -- Prodyot is from a 'raj' gharana !!
There are other aspects -- Arrogance .... it comes easily in Nagaland. And also there is a hunger for power !! These are also inherent about northeast politics.
But one message is clear -- the BJP will stay on and Lotus may not bloom in hard rocks.
But thy 'hand' of the Congress will be a forgotten symbol unless Gaurav Gogoi delivers and unseat Himanta.
Many 'traditional and genuine' BJP leaders, workers and supporters will like to ensure one part - exit of Himanta. But between Gaurav Gogoi and Sarbanda Sonowal ... they may get into two minds.
