No other member—including China—joined Pakistan's press statement mission against India,
Left red-faced !!
During the 90-minute 'closed door' session, UNSC members raised concerns over Pakistan’s escalating nuclear rhetoric and recent missile tests.
Often leaving Islamabad (for that matter Rawalpindi) 'isolated' and leaking wounds, they said Pakistan's actions and "missile tests" actually contributed to regional instability.
Participants also rejected the "false flag" narrative pushed by Pakistan and pressed for accountability in the wake of the deadly attack.
Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the powerful Council, had requested for "closed-door consultations" on the situation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, once again "misused" the UN Security Council platform to spread false claims against India.
In an attempt to divert attention from the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, Pakistan brought up the Kashmir issue, accusing India of military buildup and making provocative statements, many participants suggested.
To the embarrassment of Pakistan, on Monday (May 5) morning, US Secretary General Antonio Guterres voiced concern over tensions between India and Pakistan being at “their highest in years”.
“Targeting civilians is unacceptable – and those responsible must be brought to justice through credible and lawful means,” he had said.
Guterres also stressed that it is essential – especially at this critical hour — to avoid a military confrontation that could easily spin out of control.
“Now is the time for maximum restraint and stepping back from the brink. That has been my message in my ongoing outreach with both countries. Make no mistake: A military solution is no solution,” the UN chief said
Questions were also raised about the possible involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and concerns were voiced over tourists being targeted for their religious identity, the source said.
In fact, Pakistan's attempts to internationalise the issue fell flat, with no other member—including China—joining its press statement after the meeting.
The session concluded without any resolution, statement, or press release, effectively isolating Pakistan during and after the consultations. Several members reiterated that bilateral issues with India should be addressed through direct dialogue, sources added.
The meeting took place just hours after Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the situation had reached its most volatile point in years.
Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack was the most serious step taken to fight against terrorism.
"The non-kinetic measures taken so far are perhaps the most serious steps India has taken against terrorism as compared to any terror episodes in the past. Suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is a huge step. It has affected Pakistan, which has called it an act of war," Bisaria said.
He stressed that kinetic measures were essential to set up a credible deterrence so that cross-border terrorism doesn't happen again.
"It is important to have kinetic action in the mix to ensure that the deterrence is credible, lasting and targets the Pakistan Army. The objective is to set up the deterrence to avoid a Pahalgam-like attack again," the former envoy said
