Naga leader Imchen flays continuous efforts to defame SC Jamir :::: "...only one individual and one community cannot be correct"

Those who attack SC Jamir, also show disrespect to Vizol and Jasokie : Imchen

New Delhi

The negativity has taken the Naga society in its grip and "we are walking the dangerous path" of tribalism and hatred, cautions BJP legislator and former Nagaland Minister Imkong L. Imchen.

In a telephonic interview with this journalist, he said that - "The tendency to find fault with a man like Shri S C Jamir for anything and everything wrong in Naga society is an unfortunate, motivated and misguided move".

"Don't ever think I am defending or supporting S C Jamir today because I am also an Ao.... The truth is I feel embarrassed that while people tend to attack Jamir, they forget for Statehood we cannot blame other towering figures of the past," he said.

Imchen said, 'While it is true Jamir was the Joint Secretary to the Naga People's Convention (NPC) when the peace treaty was worked upon; but there were more senior leaders like J B Jasokie, Late Vizol and also Dr. Imkongliba.... So what are they suggesting, all these people were wrong".

To a question, he said, "I am the last man to believe that only one individual and one community is correct and truthful and the rest of us are a bunch of jokers".

He did not elaborate further saying, " As an elected MLA and a former Home Minister I know the risk of elaborating everything. Media should be careful in publishing anything and everything against Shri S C Jamir".

Imchen said - "Do not ever think Jamir at the age of 93 can be a soft target....People will revolt and any former IAS officer or IPS officer from Manipur or Arunachal Pradesh cannot get away with such third grade statements. If you are educated, behave like one".

The former Minister said, "Mr S C Jamir was never perfect...I am also not. Politically I also disagreed with him especially when as a regionalist I did not approve his moves. But that does not mean, I will tolerate anyone showing disrespect to Shri Jamir".

On this backdrop, he said, "K Therie is also a Congressman and we had political differences but some of his statements made recently on the controversies around Jamir is something I also agree....

If we are young, we must show respect to elders and a man who has turned 93 cannot be allowed to tolerate such illogical and personal attack",

Answering questions, he said, "Whereas some individuals are trying to single out Dr S C Jamir as the one and the only one who brought the Statehood under the Indian Union; the same people try to shield other senior signatories of the 16 Point Agreement from all blames if at all there is any blame."

To another question, he said "The Naga peace talks have reached a sort of confusing stage in the year 2024 and there are serious doubts in the minds of Naga people about the sincerity of Govt of India and others vis-a-vis the 27-year-old negotiations".

At this juncture, people should not display "cowardice" and added, "The ugly days of a mixed economy of corruption, nepotism and Stalinism are over. The Double standards in politics is also no more tolerable"

He also maintained: "I would like to lay stress on the fact that the Nagas or any ethnic and religious community outside the present state of Nagaland must accept the realities of our statehood".
