Nagaland polls: Migratory birds and tourist friends : Spin doctor and Dr Brave

Dimapur/ Kohima

Public memory is not a weapon of convenience. But generally people in power take it that way. Success and nervousness are often on same page. Both are perhaps products of habit and less of skills.

Nagaland's record breaking Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is following a new-normal route for himself. He throws up a few spins. The other day he acknowledged there's problem in his backwards. Hence he asserted that "Migratory" political parties will do a vanishing act after the polls.

Around the same time he planned with his friends and political sycophants that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and a most NDPP-friendly BJP leader should visit Pughoboto.

On Monday, he was lucky. Friend Himanta Biswa Sarma says Rio is also a Candidate of the BJP for the post of Chief Minister. Home Minister Amit Shah says a new (and old government) under "Rio sahab" will resolve all problems.

It appears some astrologers had advised the "efficient regime" (sic) not to deliver anything 2022. Roads are really good and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh says almost roads have reached people's bedrooms. What you experience on power sector is something only in your imagination!

Now, what's actually the importance of Pughoboto? There is a medico sweating it out against NDPP nominee Y Vikheho Swu. The seat allocated to BJP in 2018 has been snatched in the name of alliance understanding.

But we fail to understand why some handpicked leaders from Assam and Delhi can become mentors amd saviours but two parties led by their Dalit leaders Chirag Paswan and Ramdas Athawale are "Migratory birds". Many normal politics and law -- like the simplest of all Income tax and ED scanners - do not apply to Nagaland. So such "migratory" remark went off without drawing into any row.

On the other hand A Sukhato,  a former medical department principal director, is willing to play Dr Brave and has taken the battle into the rival camp.

Some LJP (Ram Vilas) critics say Sukhato is actually playing Dr Resourceful politically and especially in Nagaland context and this has made NDPP acutely nervous.

Pughoboto as a constituency will continue to make headlines in the next few months and if Dr Sukhato can make it; the segment's name in the history will be well established. Analysts may also develop interest to study the politics in and around Pughoboto. One obvious question that can figure in the thesis paper could be -- What finally decides people's or voters' mood in Pughoboto that had once produced an idealist regionalist Huska Sumi.

Politics is an art of the possible. In the NDPP camp of course the self decided theme is 'denial'; they may even deny this theorem. But Dr Sukhato and his poll managers and LJP (Ram Vilas) are working hard.

Elections in 2023 could have already generated excitements.

But more developments are likely. In that case, let us examine a few.

Contesting only 15 seats, the LJP (Ram Vilas) has the theme -- what if we are to do well and emerge as the single largest party or at least the second. Such a scenario is not ruled out. Such a possibility will force political parties to go back to the table and negotiate post-poll formulae.

Next question could be can Dr Sukhato emerge as the Legislative party leader. This is not to suggest that Dr Brave is having a cakewalk but possibilities of the scenarios cannot be ignored either. All these have joined hands to strengthen a fair argument that pressure is mounting on NDPP by every passing day. Himanta's statement is very much a booster.

The desperation is pushing Nagaland's longest serving Chief Minister to make a reference to increasing of assembly seats.

A Chief Minister is having selective amnesia that such a move has been agreed by NNPG and the centre. So, does it mean he endorses Agreed Position of 2017 too and his move will not displease some of his time tested friends and well wishers.

Last month Congress president K Therie endorsed Agreed Position. N Kitovi Zhimomi and his core team should feel proud that their Status Paper is

a much talked about episode in remaking of Nagaland.
