Ex cop: Kharkrang

The crucial BJP central election committee meeting in Delhi on Wednesday evening reportedly has decided to repose faith in former IPS officer K Kharkrang for the prestigious North Shillong assembly segment.

Kharkrang quit his job last August and had joined the BJP "with a lot of high expectations"to serve the people of Shillong and his constituency.

Among others four former MLAs who joined the saffron outfit will be lucky to walk away with the tickets that are to be announced by the party's central leadership on Thursday, Feb 2.

Talking to this journalist, Kharkrang unveiled his priorities and the roadmap as a future legislator and said fighting the drug menace and improving the rates of conviction against criminals will be his focused and determined approach.

"In Assam since the BJP came to power they have no insurgency problem. And whatever they had, a lot of them have surrendered. These are the things we need to bring in Meghalaya," he had said.

The drug menace and peddling are serious challenges and they are serious as conviction rates are very low and moreover on drug there is no effective coordination between police forces in all northeastern states.

Four MLAs include Benedict Marak (Raksamgre) and Ms Fairlene Sangma (Selsella) - both who were withthe NPP. Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang (Mawsynram) was in Trinamool and Samuel Sangma Independent MLA represented the Baghmara assembly segment.

Himalaya Muktan was a key catch for the saffron party in Khasi belt which has 36 seats.

Among others Martin M. Danggo, former Speaker and ex-NPP leader, is likely to get the saffron party ticket from Ranikor constituency.

“The NPP didn’t give respect to our leader (Danggo), he was neglected. The Chief Minister (Conrad Sangma) didn’t even take his calls. Now from this morning he (Conrad Sangma) and his office bearers are calling frantically. We too are not receiving the calls,” said Admiral Marak, a supporter of Danggo last week.

The NPP is yet to name a candidate for Ranikor assembly segment.

There will be 60 candidates from the BJP this time unlike 2018 and the list also include women candidates like Ria Sangma and Ferling Sangma.

From Dalu, the BJP nominee could be Dipul Marak, ex Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie and A L Hek will come from their expected seats.

So will be another sitting MLA and Minister.

The BJP is ambitious of doing well in the Garo hills and among others party vice president Bernard Marak is likely to contest from South Tura.

Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma will file his nomination to contest the upcoming Feb 27 polls from South Tura, sources said,
