Can Nagaland hope for a 'pre-Christmas miracle' ?

"Centre may not wait for eternity for 100 percent consensus"

New Delhi

What makes pro-Solution stakeholders among Nagas smile?

Amid uncertainty about the prospect of any solution to the Naga peace talks vis-a-vis elections, the NNPG leaders met peace emissary A K Mishra here on Saturday.
Nothing specific about the meeting has been shared but the NNPG delegation led by its convener N Kitovi Zhimomi was "more than happy".

"This time we are more than happy.....and we are confident of an early breakthrough unlike others," one NNPG insider merely said when contacted after the three hour long meeting.

Sources in Delhi echoed similar sentiments and maintained it was more than chit chat that often happens and "we are meeting again."

Responding to this, the NNPG source said, after a long spell there are some positive vibes in Delhi.

"This is about the entire trip and not merely one or two meetings".

The Saturday meeting came in the context of several rounds of discussions Mishra and other concerned people in Delhi had with the NSCN (IM) leaders including Thuingaleng Muivah and V S Atem during the last one week.

However, skepticism persists strongly about the prospect of a solution as the 'pro status quo lobby' is still on their job. A few NGOs and civil society leaders are also camping in Delhi and trying to impress that the Naga solution should be inclusive.

The NSCN (IM) leaders are also still maintaining that there would not be any compromise on Flag and Constitution.

Sources said these two major differences had prevailed prominently even during the Kolkata meeting between NNPG and NSCN (IM) leaders in presence of FNR representatives.

But the differences and some 'free candid exchange of words' during the Kolkata meet on Oct 18 was kept hidden from the media.

The statement signed by N Kitovi of NNPG and NSCN (IM) vice chairman Tongmeth Wangnao had given the impression that things had been broadly "agreed between two warring sides".

But sources in Delhi say that other than one "metaphysical press statement and that both sides met together... and that a council of Naga relationships and cooperation will be formed, there was no mutual agreement on real hard issues".

Not facing the truth at this critical juncture may not be a feasible proposition, a key source has emphasized.

However, it goes without stating that the centre is still walking slowly and cautiously and does not want to be seen as someone trying to impose the solution.

"The Naga problem ought to be resolved not only in an inclusive manner but also through people's initiatives in Nagaland itself," an informed source suggested.

The centre may not like to wait for eternity for a 100 percent consensus, the source added.
