Mission 370 Plus -- PM leads BJP's midnight meet to pick up Lok Sabha candidates : Meeting started 1030 PM lasted four hours

The ruthless formula of the hard taskmaster Narendra Modi will prevail. The 'performance' and 'sincerity' being two broad criteria, it is likely about 70 sitting candidates may be replaced by newer faces .... including from other parties.

(BJP sought the opinions of the local/constituency level people through Namo app on the ground by inquiring about the three most popular leaders in each area seat. )

(A Core group comprising among others B L Santhosh and Amit Shah did first screening of the intending candidates.)

Winnability is the catchword.

For example: BJP may surprise in Asansol in West Bengal and field a non-Bengali playback singer. The intent is to stall Trinamool's Shatrughan Sinha. The party leader Agnimitra Pal is seeking candidature from Bardhaman-Durgapur and in that process sitting MP S S Ahluwalia may be replaced.

Thus, BJP's outreach extended beyond party lines, with concerted efforts to attract candidates from 'other parties' as well.

The BJP leadership made it clear that the tickets of MPs with subpar performance would be revoked without hesitation. The names will have several surprises.

BJP president J P Nadda and other top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for four hours well past mid-night to select Lok Sabha candidates. The party leadership is keen to name candidates before announcement of poll dates.

In fact, the first list of candidates could be announced today, March 1, to give candidates about 50 days time to kick-start the campaign.

Highlights:

PM Modi to visit Jharkhand, West Bengal and Bihar on 1st-2nd March.

He will inaugurate, dedicate and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth Rs 35,700 crores in Jharkhand and Rs 22,000 crores in West Bengal.

The BJP employed a multi-layered and exhaustive process, encompassing public feedback, internal evaluations, and high-level strategic discussions, to select the candidates.

The party has harnessed technology to solicit feedback from the grassroots level. Using the Namo App, the public was given a platform to voice their opinions on the performance of incumbent MPs, and in a departure from conventional methods, the BJP sought the opinions of the people on the ground by inquiring about the three most popular leaders in each area.

This bottom-up approach, according to the party, aimed to ensure that the candidates resonated with the sentiments and aspirations of the local population.

Over the past two years, The BJP has continually sought feedback from its MPs, evaluating their performance and addressing concerns.

To further enhance the decision-making process, the BJP reached out to survey agencies to compile comprehensive reports on each parliamentary constituency.

Ministers were tasked with visiting Lok Sabha seats, compiling reports, and providing valuable insights into the performance of incumbent MPs.

-BJP Mahila Morcha is expected to reach out to women voters.

-The BJP is planning a Nari Shakti Vandan Marathon, and reportedly, lakhs of women are likely to take part in this.

-The BJP has also reportedly planned padyatras and scooty rallies.

-Sources say all MPs and MLAs have been told to participate.

The gathered information from ministers and organisational sources was then collated in state-level election committee meetings, laying the foundation for the final selection process. Subsequent to these deliberations, the core BJP group of each state engaged in discussions with top leaders like Mr Nadda, Home Minister Shah, and general secretary BL Santosh.

India’s GDP surpasses expectations :::: Growth accelerates to 8.4% in third quarter

 A season of Great Expectations

"Global demand has been a challenge given uncertain global growth... But India's external sector is not showing any signs of vulnerability". -- CEA

"Robust 8.4% GDP growth in Q3 2023-24 shows the strength of Indian economy and its potential," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Our efforts will continue to bring fast economic growth which shall help 140 crore Indians lead a better life and create a Viksit Bharat," he notes.

Overall, the Indian economy ticks many boxes in the right way. If there are any question marks, they are coming from the global economy: CEA Nageswaran

Truly the growth rate is commendable as it comes despite Ukraine-Russia war. And also notable is the fact that India is growing at the 'fastest pace' in an era when Japan & United Kingdom are into recession.

The economy grew sharply during the third quarter of FY24 at 8.4 per cent, compared to 4.3 per cent in the same period last year. In fact, Analysts had predicted growth below 7%.

Moreover,  the Q3 GDP growth is better than 7.6% in Q2.

"GDP at constant (2011-12) prices in Q3 of 2023-24 is estimated at Rs 43.72 lakh crore, against Rs 40.35 lakh crore in Q3 of 2022-23, showing a growth rate of 8.4 percent," said the government's release.

The double-digit growth rate of the construction sector (10.7 per cent), followed by a good growth rate of the manufacturing sector (8.5 per cent) has boosted the GDP growth in FY24, according to the government.

The growth in these sectors has also been attributed as key reasons behind the stellar 8.4 per cent growth in the third quarter of the ongoing financial year.

Take aways:

--That the economy continues to defy expectations underscores the structural transformation. So there is a case for global agencies to make an upward adjustment to their estimate of India's potential growth.

--High-frequency indicators point toward continued good performance in Q4 FY24 too. That is a good sign for the growth momentum.

Observation:

India's economy grew at its fastest pace in one-and-half years in the final three months of 2023, led by strong manufacturing and construction activity and bolstering Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic record just months before a national election.

"The ongoing growth momentum is indicative of the Indian economy's resilience, notwithstanding global headwinds," said Sunil Kumar Sinha, economist at India Ratings, noting that industrial growth continued its good run in the quarter.

India has consistently beat market expectations and is ranked as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with China struggling to recover after the pandemic and the euro zone narrowly escaping a recession.

Such a strong showing in the last major economic data release before elections due by May could bolster Modi's chances after he made high economic growth one of his main platforms at rallies across the country.

The December growth "shows the strength of Indian economy and its potential," Modi said in a social media post.

Modi has sharply raised government spending on infrastructure and offered incentives to boost manufacturing of phones, electronics, drones and semiconductors to help India compete with likes of Vietnam and Thailand.

The manufacturing sector, which for the past decade has accounted for 17% of Asia's third-largest economy, expanded 11.6% year-on-year in the December quarter, while investment growth was above 10% for the second consecutive quarter, and the construction sector grew by more than 9%.

"Manufacturing sector growth was supported by lower input costs," said Rajani Sinha, Economist at CareEdge

The farm sector, which accounts for about 15% of the $3.7 trillion economy, continued to struggle due to unfavourable monsoon rains. It contracted 0.8% in the December quarter, compared with 1.6% growth in the September quarter.

Slowing rural growth dragged down farm incomes and some farmers have hit the streets demanding higher procurement prices.

The pace of growth in real rural wages was around 1% in 2023 after contracting nearly 3% in the previous two years, according to ICRA, while average salaries in urban areas have been going up by nearly 10% a year.

However, policymakers remain optimistic on rural recovery.

"With the anticipated better value addition in the farm sector next financial year, rural demand growth and rural income growth will be even better and more evident in FY25," country's Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran said.

The Indian rupee is expected to have a quiet day on Thursday, as traders await a U.S. inflation reading that will be important in guiding expectations on when the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates.

India's market regulator has asked money managers to consider restricting one-off investments from clients in small- and mid-cap stock mutual funds and cut commissions offered for their sale, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

Left with no option and under tremendous attack, West Bengal Police arrest Sheikh Shahjahan, TMC leader accused of sexual violence and land grab

Trinamool’s Sheikh Shahjahan arrested in Sandeshkhali case

Shahjahan sent to 10 days' police custody after arrest

West Bengal Police arrested Sheikh Shahjahan, the Trinamool Congress leader accused of sexual violence and land grab by several women in Sandeshkhali.

Significantly, Additional Solicitor General of India, S V Raju, appearing for the ED, told Calcutta High Court that if the state police arrest Sheikh, there is a likelihood of the case being diluted by the state police. Supporters of Shahjahan had attacked ED officials in January.

The ED team had gone to search his premises in connection with a scam on January 5.

Sandeshkhali episode left Mamata-Abhishek duo embarrassed

The 53-year-old Trinamool strongman has been picked up from the Minakhan area in North 24 Parganas after as many as 55 days of absconding.

The arrest comes three days after the Calcutta High Court pulled up the state police for the delay in taking action against the Trinamool leader and stated that "he should be arrested".

A large number of women in Sandeshkhali had accused Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of land-grab and sexual assault under coercion. The riverine area has been embroiled in a series of protests for more than a month, demanding the arrest of Sheikh and his accomplices.

Shajahan has been absconding since January 5, when a mob allegedly affiliated with him attacked Enforcement Directorate officials who had gone to search his premises in connection with a scam on January 5.

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has received 50 complaints of “sexual abuse and land grab” from tribal families against the Trinamool leader and his associates. The state government officials stated that they have received almost 1,250 complaints, including 400 related to land issues.

The High Court is set to hear the case against Shahjahan on March 4. The High Court on Wednesday had directed that the Trinamool Congress leader can also be arrested by the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

However, additional Solicitor General of India SV Raju, appearing for the ED, expressed apprehension that if the state police arrest Sheikh, there is a likelihood of the case being diluted by the state police.

A red-faced Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that no parallels should be drawn between Nandigram and Singur with the events unfolding at Sandeshkhali.

“Remember Singur is Singur, Nandigram is Nandigram, Khatra is Khatra and Bishnupur is Bishnupur. Each place has its own characteristics. So do not compare one with the other,” Mamata said during an administrative review meeting at Bankura’s Khatra.

Known for her minority-appeasement politics, Mamata also said:

“I do not want any bloodshed and any incident of torture anywhere. I do not support any wrongdoing and I won’t do that ever in my life. Even if some wrong was unknowingly committed somewhere, I do not support that as well".

Along with 'Atrocities' against women; Land grabbing by those with Trinamool connections is emerging a major issue. The common faceless people are gradually speaking out against 'dominance politics' of those in power and moreover there is a new angle.

Now. locals say they could not vote since 2013 in any poll including Lok Sabha and assembly elections as their cards used to be taken by political goondas and agents.  Sandeshkhali falls under Basirhat parliamentary constituency.

The West Bengal government has decided to set up cooperatives for the landowners whose plots were forcibly converted into bheris (shallow fish ponds) allegedly by Trinamul Congress leaders in Sandeshkhali and impart them training on pisciculture to offer them alternative livelihood options.

Sources in the state administration said the idea was mooted after it was found that the fertility of the soil in land parcels had declined because of saline water.

Has DMK Govt 'space ad' with Chinese symbols come as a 'blessing in disguise' for Modi and BJP ? ::::: "It's high time, DMK is punished," says the Prime Minister

"They are not ready to accept India's progress in the space sector. They do not want to present India's space success to the world. They have insulted our scientists and our space sector."

"Now it is high time the DMK is punished for their deeds," the Prime Minister thundered.

PM Modi, BJP On Warpath Over Tamil Nadu Minister's 'China Flag On Indian Rocket' Ad

The source of the controversy is the rocket 's red nose, which features four golden stars arced around the right side of a larger fifth star - the same emblem on the Chinese national flag.

(A newspaper ad hailing the creation of a second launch pad for India's space agency ISRO - in Tamil Nadu's Kulsekarapatinam - has triggered a furious row after an image of the Chinese flag figured prominently on the rocket in the poster. The ad was commissioned by Tamil Nadu's Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan, who did so in his personal capacity, highlighting the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's role in bringing this long-pending project to the state, NDTV reported

Mr Radhakrishnan has been unavailable for comment, but Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi (in whose constituency the ISRO facility will be built) has defended her party. She acknowledged the error - attributed to the artwork designer - and said the issue does not merit the backlash it has received.

The poster itself shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi - who was in the state, one in which his Bharatiya Janata Party has traditionally struggled for votes, this week to drum up support before the general election - and Chief Minister MK Stalin side-by-side, with a rocket in the background.

The source of the controversy is that rocket - its red nose features four golden stars arced around the right side of a larger fifth star. This is the same emblem that marks the Chinese national flag.

Mr Modi and the BJP have been quick to pounce on the error.

The PM ripped into the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which thumped the BJP (then allied with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) in 2019 general and 2021 state elections.

"DMK does not do work and takes false credit. They paste their stickers on our schemes. But now they have crossed the limit... they pasted China's sticker to take credit for the ISRO launchpad..."

"They are not ready to accept India's progress in the space sector. They do not want to present India's space success to the world. They have insulted our scientists and our space sector," Modi said.

Tamil Nadu has 39 seats and in 2019, barring one by AIADMK, the M K Stalin-led DMK had won 38 seats.  The BJP is desperate to make forays into Tamil Nadu politics and its performance here will be crucial to ensure easier return of the Modi government.

PM Modi has announced on the floor of Parliament that his party will win 370 seats on its own and the alliance NDA will win 400 plus. For obvious reasons, BJP's target seems to be on the higher side.

Now numbers game ... from Opposition I.N.D.I alliance point of view ::::: AAP fields 3 sitting MLAs in Delhi

Himachal Pradesh, BJP leader Jairam Thakur says "This Congress government has lost all the moral rights to stay in power. As far as I have been informed, CM Sukhu has also presented his resignation inside the House. Maybe the high command has asked him I am not sure..."

There are nearly 100 seats in four states - Tamil Nadu - 39, Kerala - 20, Andhra Pradesh - 25 and Punjab -13 ... where it was clean sweep for them in 2019.

In other words out of 97 seats, the BJP had only one - actor Sunny Deol from Gurdaspur.

Of course in Punjab, the Akali Dal - then an ally of the saffron party- had won two seats -- husband-wife duo of Badals.

From Sukhbir Singh Badal won and from Bathinda, it was Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who also served as Minister in the Modi cabinet in Modi Sarkar 1.0 and also Modi Sarkar 2.0 -- till the farm law came the Akalis walked out of the NDA.

The AAP has been winning Delhi assembly polls consecutively 2015 and 2020 recording landslides wins, but in both Lok Sabha polls 2014 and 2019, it could not open even one seat out of seven.

From statistical point of view, the move to ally with the Congress looks good. The party has now named four candidates in Delhi.

Malviya Nagar MLA, Somnath Bharti will be AAP nominee from New Delhi (won by BJP's Meenakshi Lekhi). Bharti is also the Delhi Jal Board vice-chairman.

Mahabal Mishra, a former Congress MP from West Delhi, is contesting from the same constituency, this time on an AAP ticket.

The 70-year-old leader had quit the Congress years ago and will be contesting the seat with a high number of Purvanchali voters. He had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP's Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma.

Kuldeep Kumar, a sitting SC MLA from Kondli, will be AAP's candidate from East Delhi.

The constituency is currently represented by BJP's celebrity candidate Gautam Gambhir.

The AAP has fielded Tughlakabad MLA Sahi Ram Pahalwan from South Delhi seat. The constituency is currently represented by BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri.

The Congress party will contest on North East Delhi, North West, and Chandni Chowk seats.

In Haryana, AAP has fielded former Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Gupta from Kurukshetra. The AAP had already announced its three candidates for Assam and two for Gujarat.

As far as Delhi is concerned, a similar seat sharing formula was proposed by then Congress chief Rahul Gandhi during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But the talks between the two parties had collapsed.

The BJP had clinched all seven seats in the Capital in the 2019 elections in a rout for the AAP and Congress who together secured fewer than 50% of the votes polled.

Besides AAP, the Congress has also struck a seat sharing arrangement with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state that sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha. The grand old party will contest on 17 seats while SP and other allies will contest on the remaining 63.

In Kerala, the advantage is always with the non-BJP forces that is the Left and the Congress. The BJP does not even one MLA out of 140 in the Kerala assembly and in 2019 Lok Sabha polls too, it could not do any miracle. Andhra Pradesh also continues to give electoral nightmare to the BJP.

Hence, if Opposition wants to put up a stiff fight, they will have to retain their grip in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and two southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. But the CPI decision to field Annie Raja, wife of party leader D Raja, from Wayanad has so far given mixed signals. Why the communists are now bent upon life further miserable for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi ?

It could appear a 'local Kerala-based drama', but the communists want to emphasise that the battle in the southern state is between UDF led by Congress and UDF.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday announced candidates for four Kerala Lok Sabha seats, nominating senior party leader Annie Raja to contest from the Wayanad constituency, a seat presently held by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

"For such a long time, CPI - under the LDF alliance - is contesting on the four seats...This time also, the party has announced its candidates for all these four constituencies. In Kerala, the fight is between LDF and UDF. So, there is nothing new in that...The situation is the same, nothing has changed," Ms Annie Raja said.

"Earlier in 2019, the CPI contested against Rahul Gandhi. We have been contesting elections from there for a very long time," she added.

Rajya Sabha MP and CPI (M) Secretary Binoy Viswam questioned the political logic of Rahul Gandhi contesting from Kerala.

Another senior CPI-M leader Brinda Karat backed the CPI move.

"The CPI has declared its candidate for the seat in Wayanad, Comrade Annie Raja, who has played a key role in 'Mahila Andholan'. Now she will be the candidate from the side of the whole LDF," he said.

"Rahul Gandhi and the Congress need to think, they say that their fight is against BJP. In Kerala, if you come and fight against Left, what message are you giving? So they need to think about their seat once again," she said.

Interesting times ahead.

In Punjab, Gurdaspur is becoming a key seat from the BJP's point of view.

Ex-MP and state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar and Kavita Khanna, wife of four-time MP and film icon Vinod Khanna, are leading the race for the BJP with half a dozen more contenders trying their luck.

Jakhar remained the Gurdaspur MP for 18 months and hence knows the political topography of the area. He, however, is keeping his cards close to the chest. On the other hand, there is a growing feeling that the party will use his services in all 13 seats. A decent performance means the doors of the Rajya Sabha will open for him.

Kavita Khanna, a Barrister-at-Law and a postgraduate in economics from a London university, had been in contention for the 2017 bypoll and the 2019 elections. Her appointment as chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Sonepat, indicates that she is on the right side of the central leadership. She also enjoys the unstinted support of a powerful spiritual leader having close ties in the top echelons of the BJP, says a report in 'The Tribune' newspaper.

Pathankot MLA Ashwani Sharma is also interested but what goes against him is the fact that he had protested Jakhar’s elevation as the state president.

Also in the fray are ex-MLAs Ashwani Sekhri, Fateh Jung Bajwa and Dinesh Babbu and former Pathankot Mayor Anil Vasudeva. In fact, Vasudeva has been the BJP’s go-to man when the going gets tough for the party.

Politics around Sandeshkhali will come to fore in March : All eyes on PM Modi's March 6 rally at Barasat

BJP's Mission 370 is linked to West Bengal in more ways than one; and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election-related sojourn in this eastern state will be inherently linked to Sandeshkhali.

Modi has three major programmes lined up in the Mamata Banerjee-ruled state in first week of March. One of the main events that the Prime Minister is likely to address will be at Barasat in North 24 Parganas.

Sandeshkhali does not fall under this parliamentary segment but it is only about 80 km away. Modi is expected to speak specifically on Sandeshkhali crisis vis-a-vis sheer goondaism, atrocities against women and land grabbing.

Prior to that of course Modi’s other two meetings will be in Arambagh and Krishnanagar on March 1 and 2, respectively. The Krishnanagar meet will be interesting to see as vocal Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra represented the seat until her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December last year over the issue of Cash for Questions scam.

Of course, Modi’s visits align with the BJP’s aim of wresting the two seats in 2024. The BJP given a tough fight but lost the Arambagh Lok Sabha seat to the TMC in 2019 by a slender margin of 1,142 votes.

As far as Sandeshkhali fiasco is concerned, the Mamata Banerjee-led dispensation is already on backfoot.

However, the TMC has planned a massive rally at the Brigade Parade grounds in Kolkata on March 10.

Blogger

The Brigade Parade grounds rally by Trinamool has been planned as a counter to the allegations of poor governance.

Party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of Mamata, has said that “March 10 will be a trailer on the anti-people leaders of the BJP and those who oppose Bengal. The film will be released during elections."

He also alleged that, "For two years, a conspiracy has been on to deprive Bengal. They (Modi government) stopped funds for two financial years. If the BJP leaders can provide any evidence that funds were indeed released for 2022-23 and 2023-24, I will quit politics.”

The island-village of Sandeshkhali has witnessed fierce protests since February 9 against local TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who is accused of sexual exploitation, land grabbing and other malpractices. Angry villagers, especially women, have taken to the streets demanding the arrest of Shahjahan and his men.

Shahjahan is on the run. Mamata's party-cadre-friendly 'police' have arrested three of his alleged accomplices.

Nirapada Sardar, a former CPI(M) MLA from Sandeshkhali and now a local BJP leader, has also been arrested for allegedly instigating violence.

Sardar was granted bail by the Calcutta High Court on February 27.

Sandeshkhali falls under Basirhat Lok Sabha seat and the seat is represented by incumbent TMC MPNusrat Jahan.

West Bengal Police on Sunday, Feb 25, detained a local TMC leader Ajit Maiti at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas on charges of land grabbing from villagers, an officer said.

Maiti, considered a close aide of fugitive Shajahan Sheikh, was detained from the residence of a civic volunteer where he had locked himself for over four hours after being chased by villagers, he said.

"When Modi will speaking on these issues, it will do wonders for the BJP electorally and also give much needed sense of confidence to the exploited Hindus from lower segments of the society," says one local BJP leader.

On average, five Pakistani flight attendants slip into Canada each year ::::::::: Rise of 'Christian nationalism' in West to boost right wing pro-Hindutva politics of Modi

On an average, five Pakistani flight attendants slip into Canada each year.

Representational image: 'India Today'

'Thank You PIA': Pakistani air hostesses fly to Canada, and 'vanish'

Maryam Raza, a cabin crew member of Pakistan International Airlines, flew to Canada and didn't board the return flight. She left behind a note thanking PIA. Maryan Raza is one of the several PIA staffers who have sought asylum in Canada in recent years.

In 2023, seven PIA staffers disappeared in Canada to seek asylum

PIA spokesperson blames it on Canada's 'liberal' asylum programme

A note saying, "Thank you, PIA (Pakistan International Airlines)," was found in a Toronto hotel room after a search.

An appreciation note, like this, is what a flight attendant would expect to find from a flyer after a nice and cosy flight. However, the note saying, ‘Thank you, PIA', was actually written by an air hostess, and not a satisfied flyer.

The note was from Maryam Raza, who worked with the PIA and had landed in Toronto on a flight from Islamabad on Monday (February 26) but didn't report for duty on her return flight to Karachi a day later.

When authorities looking for Maryam opened her hotel room, they found her PIA uniform with the ‘Thank you, PIA’ note, reported Dawn. Maryam Raza isn't the lone example of a PIA crew member landing in Canada and vanishing into thin air. In fact, she was just following a trend.

Maryam's disappearance comes just a month after PIA flight attendant Faiza Mukhtar's disappearance in Canada in January 2024. Faiza Mukhtar, who was rostered to fly back to Karachi a day after landing in Canada "did not board the flight and disappeared", said PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez Khan.

PIA CREW MEMBERS SEEKING CANADA ASYLUM SINCE 2018

The disappearances of crew members, Maryam and Faiza, actually follow a worrying trend for the PIA, which is itself battling financial and credibility losses. The disappearance of Maryam marks the second such instance in 2024.

It's probably no longer the PIA that Jacqueline Kennedy called, "Great people to fly with", in 1962. That has become the slogan of PIA since then.

In fact, Pakistan isn't the same Pakistan of the 60s. Surviving on loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and international doles, Pakistan has seen record brain drain in 2023. Unsure about their future in Pakistan, skilled professionals have been leaving the Islamic Republic in hordes.

The trend of Pakistani flight attendants disappearing after crewing a flight to Canada started back in 2019 and has picked up recently, according to aviation news website Simple Flying. However, The Media Line, a 'Mideast '-based news website, claims to have received information about PIA flight attendants seeking asylum in Canada and other countries as early as 2018.

Rise of 'Christian nationalism' in US and other western countries to boost right wing pro-Hindutva politics of Modi and BJP

"The rise of religious nationalism in Christendom, in parallel with the consolidation of the BJP as the dominant force in the Indian polity, could mark a major break in the evolution of India’s internationalism," says strategic expert and foreign policy watcher C Raja Mohan

in an 'Indian Express' article.

"Over the last century, India’s global political connections were shaped by India’s communist, socialist and Congress parties that built ties with the left and centre-left forces in Europe.

The decline of the communist parties in the West has been matched by the marginalisation of the Indian communists," he says.

Now, the fall of Russian leader Vladmir Putin’s star among evangelical Americans leaves a void they will seek to fill by lionising another foreign strongman leader devoted to a ‘family values’ platform.

If this does prove to be the case, a very likely candidate is the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, a thorn in the side of the EU.

Viktor specializes in what is being stated as “illiberal democracy” and has also  stifled dissent against his hardline, nativist, socially conservative agenda.

The Hungarian president is already the darling of certain far-Right Americans, such as the arch-reactionary writer Rod Dreher, a convert to Eastern Orthodox Christianity.

On the backdrop this context, Raja Mohan notes:

"Unlike Congress and the Left, the RSS and the BJP have less of an internationalist history. This is unsurprising given their nativist roots. This could change as the nativists around the world go global. Over the last few decades, the BJP has begun to connect, if tentatively, with political parties in other countries."

As it expanded at home in the last decade, the BJP has enhanced its outreach to the diplomatic missions in Delhi as well as foreign political parties under the “Get to know the BJP” initiative. Christian Democrats and other conservative parties in Europe, too, have been knocking at the BJP’s door.

"It is not clear if Christian nationalists can overturn liberal hegemony in the US and Europe, but they are bound to make some difference to Western polities, domestically and internationally.

This could open up new international possibilities for both the BJP and the Modi government, which have often locked horns with the Western liberal establishments in recent years," says the article.

Meanwhile, a piece in 'Open Democracy' says:

"....the Christian Broadcasting Network, which was founded by notorious culture warrior Pat Robertson and has been unequivocally critical of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has begun to cautiously praise Orbán for harbouring Ukrainian refugees and hosting NATO forces for a show of strength against Russia, while at the same time “making it clear he’s on Hungary’s side, no matter what”.

With this in mind, and given the general right-wing American embrace of Orbán that is well under way, it is likely that the American Christian Right will move to build closer ties to the Hungarian premier, the Fidesz party and Christian structures inside Hungary.

It’s important to keep an eye on these developments for those of us concerned about international coalitions working to oppose women’s and LGBTQ rights, whether or not Orbán comes to loom as large among America’s elite evangelicals as Putin once did.

Advani's Quote in 1991

C Raja Mohan also writes:

"America’s Christian “nationalism” is going “international”. In Europe, variants of Christian nationalism are on the rise and are boosting far-right political parties.

The European agenda is similar to the American one — opposition to immigration, especially Muslims, the protection of traditional European culture, rejection of gender rights, and promotion of family values under threat from the liberal hegemony over social life.

Connections are being forged between the Christian nationalists across the Atlantic. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other European leaders who support traditional values have been lionised by Christian nationalists in the US. A surprising figure on that list is Russia’s Vladimir Putin, who has put religion and ethno-nationalism at the top of his political agenda.

The Christian nationalist enthusiasm for Putin is one factor behind the current deep American divisions on Ukraine, notes the article.

Here quoting from an article in 'The Guardian' in 2020 could be relevant to reflect upon.

“Europe can ignore or deny or struggle against its own identity and its Christian roots. But by doing so the society commits suicide,” said László Kiss-Rigó, the bishop of Szeged, as he drove into Budapest on a recent afternoon. “And the more migrants that come, the more Christian values will be watered down.”

Christian values, or a particular interpretation of them, have become the centrepiece of Hungarian government messaging under its far-right leader, Viktor Orbán, and Kiss-Rigó operates at the nexus of the prime minister’s interests.

As well as his role as bishop, he is also the chairman of Szeged’s local football team, which is owned by the church. He was in Budapest to make arrangements for the inaugural concert at a new multipurpose stadium, which will be opened later this summer with an appearance by Placido Domingo – just one part of the massive investment that the football-mad Orbán has made into the sport."

Finally, take note of what C Raja Mohan writes:

"The rise of “Christian nationalism” in the US and its growing resonance across the Western world is likely to open some interesting intersections with the BJP and the Indian government in the widely expected third term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Traditionally, India has had little engagement with the Christian political formations in the US and the West. That has begun to change in the last few years, as many of these conservative forces reach out to the BJP."

MGR Broke the Tradition of Dynasty Politics: PM Modi Says Tamil Nadu Will Decide India's Future ::: "Cross voting by 9 legislators means Congress lost Majority", says BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur

"Cross voting by 9 legislators means Congress lost Majority", says BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur

It's last minute thriller, in Himachal Pradesh, BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan won the lone Rajya Sabha seat, defeating the ruling Congress candidate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Leader of the Opposition and BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur as expected was jubilant and claimed, "...I can see that the Congress government has lost the majority".

During a press conference with the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Abhishek Manu Singhvi congratulated the BJP candidate while confirming that nine Congress MLAs had cross-voted.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has alleged that Haryana Police has taken away 5-6 Congress MLAs to Haryana's Panchkula.

Karnataka may have witnessed cross-voting by two MLAs. According to sources, BJP’s ST Somashekar and Independent MLA G Janardhana Reddy may have voted in the Congress candidate’s favour.

Congress won three seats in Karnataka with Congress treasurer Ajay Maken, Nasser Hussain, and G C Chandrashekar securing victory, while BJP's Narayansa Bhandage won one seat.

JD(S) leader D Kupendra Reddy lost, garnering only 36 votes.

At least seven Samajwadi Party MLAs, namely Rakesh Pandey, Abhay Singh, Rakesh Pratap Singh, Manoj Pandey, Vinod Chaturvedi, Puja Pal, Ashutosh Maurya may have cross voted in favour of NDA, sources said. In addition to this, a BSP MLA may also have voted for the BJP.

The vote counting process has temporarily been halted in Uttar Pradesh after NDA ally Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party's Om Prakash Rajbhar raised objections about BSP MLA Jagdish Rai's vote.

It was alleged that Rai cast his vote without showing his voting preference to the nominated polling agents.

In Uttar Pradesh, several prominent Samajwadi Party leaders openly sided with the BJP and fuelled speculation that they cross-voted.

Manoj Pandey, who quit as chief whip of the Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, was among five SP MLAs who met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday.

Out of the 56 Rajya Sabha seats that had gone to polls on Tuesday, 41 members had virtually secured their seats in the Upper House.

In Rajasthan, Sonia Gandhi was elected unopposed and so were BJP's Chunnilal Garasiya and Madan Rathore.

JP Nadda was nominated as the party's candidate from the seat that fell vacant in Gujarat and was elected unopposed.

Similarly, Railway and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was elected for a second time to the Upper House with support from the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) from Odisha.

Even MoS Information and Broadcasting L Murugan was elected unopposed from Madhya Pradesh.

** Gaganyaan mission aims to carry a crew of three astronauts into low Earth orbit

** The selection and training of astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission have been rigorous

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Feb 27, gave the astronauts wings and revealed Gaganyaan Mission astronauts to the world.

The four Indian Air Force Officers will be the first Indians to go to space from Indian soil on an indigenous space vehicle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a standing ovation to the four astronauts and said, "We are witnessing another historic journey at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. India meets its four Gaganyaan astronauts. These are not just four names, but forces that will take the aspirations of 140 crore Indians to space."

Prime Minister Modi reviewed the progress of the Gaganyaan mission at the VSSC and interacted with Vyomitra, a humanoid, that will be the first to launch on the Gaganyaan Mission before astronauts set foot in the crew capsule.  Gaganyaan mission aims to carry a crew of three astronauts into low Earth orbit. This endeavour will make India the fourth nation in the world, after the United States, Russia, and China, to independently send humans into space.

The Gaganyaan spacecraft, designed to accommodate the astronauts, is being developed with advanced technology to ensure the safety and success of the mission.

The spacecraft will be equipped with life support systems, communication systems, and other essential features to sustain human life in space.

Why PM Modi’s Economy offers a real alternative to China ...... "India has arrived" --- CNN analysis

For the last three decades, Peeyush Mittal has frequently driven the 185 miles from the Indian capital to the city of Jaipur. The journey always took him six hours.

“For 30 years there’s been this promise of doing that journey in three hours. It has never been possible,” said Mittal, a portfolio manager at Matthews Asia, a San Francisco-based investment fund. “They’ve expanded the highway, gone from one lane to two lane to three lane, everything has been done. But that journey has always remained six hours.”

Except last year, when he cruised at 75 miles per hour on a new expressway connecting the two cities, and made the trip in half the time.

“My jaw dropped when I first time got on that highway. I was like, ‘Wow, man, how is this even possible … in India?” he said. The quality of India’s new infrastructure is just one of many reasons why Mittal, who manages funds focussed on emerging markets, and other investors are excited about the country’s growth prospects.

Financial professionals around the world are noticing India’s development since 2014 under two-term Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has said he wants the South Asian nation to become a $5 trillion economy by 2025.

The optimism around the world’s most populous nation is in stark contrast to the mood found in China, which is grappling with a myriad of economic challenges, including an accelerated flight of capital from the country.

Its stock markets have suffered a protracted slump since recent peaks in 2021, with more than $5 trillion in market value having been wiped out from the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong bourses. Foreign direct investment (FDI) plunged last year, and fell again in January, down nearly 12% compared to the same month in 2023.

India’s stock market, meanwhile, is hitting record highs. The value of companies listed on India’s exchanges surpassed $4 trillion late last year.

The future appears even brighter. India’s market value is expected to more than double to $10 trillion by 2030, according to a Thursday report by Jefferies, which would make it “impossible for large global investors to ignore.”

“China is a no go, so … which is the other country that can maybe replace China?” said Mittal. “There’s no country like China other than India … in some form or fashion, it is the substitute that maybe the world is looking for to drive growth.”

Japan has benefited from investors seeking an alternative to China — Tokyo’s benchmark index hit a new high for the first time in 34 years last week, helped by improving corporate profits and a weak yen. But the country is stuck in recession and recently lost its position as the world’s third biggest economy to Germany.

The latest revision by global stock index compiler MSCI reflects the bullishness towards India. MSCI said this month that it would increase India’s weighting in its emerging markets index to 18.06% from 17.98%, while reducing China’s to 24.77%.

MSCI’s indexes help institutional investors worldwide decide how to allocate money and where to focus their research.

“India’s weight in the MSCI emerging market index was about 7% a couple of years back,” said Aditya Suresh, head of India equity research at Macquarie Capital. “Do I think that 18% [in the MSCI index] is naturally gravitating more towards 25%? Yeah, that’s kind of clearly where our conversations are leading us to believe.”

As India heads towards national elections in the coming months, market watchers are hoping that Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party wins a third term, bringing greater predictability to economic policies for the next five years.

“If Modi is back with a majority and political stability is there, then I can certainly say with confidence that there’ll be a lot more investor interest in India on a more sustainable basis,” said Mittal.

The next global growth engine

There are good reasons for the euphoria around India. From a surging young population to humming factories, the country has a lot going in its favor.

The International Monetary Fund expects India to grow by 6.5% next financial year compared to 4.6% for China. Analysts at Jefferies expect the country to become the world’s third largest economy by 2027.

Much like China more than three decades ago, India is only at the beginning of a infrastructure transformation, spending billions on building roads, ports, airports and railways.

There is a “very strong multiplier effect” on the economy from the investments in digital and physical infrastructure, which “you cannot roll back,” Suresh said.

The world’s fastest growing major economy is also trying to capitalize on the rethink underway among companies on supply chains. Global businesses want to diversify operations away from China, where they faced obstacles during the pandemic and are exposed to risks arising from tension between Beijing and Washington.

“India is a prime candidate to benefit from the ‘friend-shoring’ of supply chains, notably at the expense of China,” wrote Hubert de Barochez, a market economist at Capital Economics, in January. As a result, some of the world’s biggest companies, including Apple (AAPL) supplier Foxconn, are expanding their operations in India. Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said last June his company is looking to invest in India “as soon as humanly possible.”

“[Modi] really cares about India because he’s pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something we intend to do,” Musk told reporters.

But some worry that India’s confidence may be bordering on hubris.

Is it worth the hype?

While interest in the world’s fifth largest economy is rising, the lofty prices of India’s stocks are scaring some international investors away.

Indian shares have always been expensive compared to other emerging economies, said Suresh, but now “the premium on the premium has expanded.”

Domestic investors, both retail and institutional, seem to be brushing aside these high valuations, driving India’s stock market to unprecedented peaks.

According to Macquarie, retail investors alone own 9% of India’s equity market value versus foreign investors at slightly under 20%. Analysts, however, expect foreign investments to pick up in the second half of 2024, once the election is out of the way.

There’s another potential challenge. Despite its new economic swagger, India does not have the capacity to absorb all the money that is flowing out of China, whose economy is still about five times bigger.

China “has a few too many companies which are $100 and $200 billion plus [in value],” Mittal said. “It is difficult to find home for that kind of chunk of money in India.”

But the fact that India’s sizzling rally is driven by domestic investors adds to the country’s strengths and reduces its dependence on foreign fund flows. “It just massively insulates India from global dynamics,” Suresh said.

Apart from geopolitical rifts and an uncertain economic outlook, foreign companies and investors have grown increasingly wary of domestic political risks in China, including the possibility of raids and detentions. Institutional investors are still very wary about buying Chinese stocks, even though many now look like a bargain.

“There are many good businesses in China, but with all the regulatory issues it becomes very difficult to predict what they will look like in the long run,” said Priyanka Agnihotri, portfolio manager at Baltimore-based Brown Advisory.

India, on the other hand, enjoys healthy relations with the West and other major economies, and is aggressively wooing large firms to set up factories in the country.

In her budget speech in February, Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said FDI inflows since Modi first came to power in 2014 stood at nearly $600 billion, which is twice the amount during the previous decade.

“For encouraging sustained foreign investment, we are negotiating bilateral investment treaties with our foreign partners, in the spirit of first develop India,” she added.

Analysts say that it would hard to stop the economic juggernaut India has set in motion, irrespective of what happens to China.

“Even if China comes back to the table and resolves a lot of problems, I don’t think India is going back into the background anymore,” said Mittal. “It has arrived.”
