Google's AI chatbot Gemini violates India's IT laws: Central Govt

Google's Gemini AI chatbot is facing the ire on social media for "discrimination against the whites", "amplifying Hamas propaganda" and now for allegedly being "biased" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

An X user took to the social media platform to complain about Google's Gemini AI tool's alleged “bias" against PM Modi.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar reacted to the user's complaint against Google's Gemini AI tool. He said on Friday that the platform is in violation of the Information Technology (IT) rules as well as other laws.

"These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal code," Chandrasekhar posted. The minister marked the post to Google and the Ministry of Electronics and IT indicating further action in the matter.

On Thursday, Google said it is temporarily stopping its Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot from generating images of people. The development came a day after Google apologised for “inaccuracies" in historical depictions that it was creating.

Gemini users this week posted screenshots on social media of historically white-dominated scenes with racially diverse characters that they say it generated, leading critics to raise questions about whether the company is over-correcting for the risk of racial bias in its AI model.

“We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature," Google said in a post on the social media platform X. “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon," it added.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have accused Google of running "racist, anti-civilisational programming" with its artificial intelligence (AI) models. This comes after Google paused the ability for Gemini AI to generate images of people, as controversy erupted over inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images.

"I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilisational programming clear to all," Musk wrote on X.

"I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilisational programming clear to all," Musk wrote on X.

The controversy erupted when images generated by Gemini AI depicted specific white figures (like the US ‘Founding Fathers’) Nazi-era German soldiers as “people of colour”. In an earlier statement, the company said it was aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions.

“Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here,” the company had admitted.

The Tesla billionaire also targeted Gemini's product lead, Jack Krawczyk. Krawczyk stated on Wednesday that Gemini's image-generating skills are designed to "reflect our global user base."

"I'm not picking on some rando. This nut is a big part of why Google's AI is so racist & sexist," Musk wrote. In addition, the tech billionaire stated that he did a Google search on his phone and noticed that the "top two choices are pro-censorship."

Google started offering image generation via its Gemini (formerly Bard) AI platform earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Google has introduced its new open AI model called Gemma AI. The model is based on the same research and technology that was used to build its Gemini AI models.

The company said that the newly introduced model is targeted at the open community and will help developers in building AI responsibly. The company has also introduced a Responsible Generative AI Toolkit along with the Gemma AI model. The toolkit contains a debugging tool and a guide with best practices for AI development based on Google’s experience.
