As probe continues on Newsclick, Amit Shah asks probe agencies to adopt 'ruthless approach' to destroy terrorism

“All anti-terror agencies will have to adopt a ruthless approach that no new terrorist organisation can be formed in the country,” Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday.

Shah was speaking after inaugurating the two-day '3rd Anti-Terror Conference' organised by the NIA.

Shah said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central and state agencies have succeeded in firmly curbing all forms of terrorism in the country in the last nine years.”

Union Minister of State for Home, Nisith Pramanik, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of IB and the Director General of the NIA, including the Director General of the Central Armed Police Forces, Director General of Police of States, senior officials of the Centre and states participated in the meet.

The Home Minister also presented medals for excellent service to NIA officers.

Shah said that the job of the NIA, ATS and STF was not just to investigate, but they should go beyond the scope of investigation and work towards attacking terrorism with out-of-the-box thinking.

The Modi government has taken a tough stance on all challenges like crypto, hawala, terror-funding, organised crime syndicates, narco-terror links, which has yielded very good results, but a lot remains to be done still, he said.

The minister said that Model Anti-terrorism Structure should be established under the purview of NIA, the hierarchy, structure, and SoPs of Investigation of all anti-terrorism agencies in all states should be made uniform for better coordination between central and state agencies.

“All anti-terrorism agencies must adopt such a ruthless approach so that a new terrorist organisation cannot be formed. The task of NIA, ATS, and STF should not be limited to investigation but they should also think out of the box and take innovative measures to counter the terrorism”, Shah was quoted as saying in a home ministry statement.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "Our understanding is that the (Afghan) embassy in New Delhi is functioning or continuing to function.

We are in touch with the Afghan diplomats who are there in that embassy, as well as with the Afghan diplomats who are at the consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad.”

The MEA said that they had received communication last week “purportedly from the embassy, indicating that it intends to suspend operations at the end of September.”

The government said that the decision to shut down an embassy is an internal matter of a foreign mission.

“However, we have noted that the Afghan consulates general in Mumbai and in Hyderabad voiced their objection to that decision or to such a decision. We are also aware that there has been a prolonged absence of the ambassador and that a large number of Afghan diplomats have left India in the recent past,” Arindam Bagchi said.

“We would hope that a substantial number of Afghan nationals in India, including students, are able to continue to receive necessary consular support. On our part, we will continue with our efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan," he said.

On Saturday, the Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi announced the decision to cease its operations, effective October 1, 2023. The embassy cited a "lack of support from the host government", alleging that it has experienced a notable absence of crucial support from the host government, which it said hindered its ability to carry out duties effectively.

On US Ambassador to Pakistan's visit to PoK

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India’s stand on the entire Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir being an integral part of India is well known.

“We would urge the international community to respect our sovereignty and territorial integrity. We have raised our concerns about the visit of the US ambassador to Pakistan with his country (US side)".

On Canada’s diplomatic presence in India

“Given the much higher diplomatic presence of Canadian diplomats and their continuing interference in our internal affairs, we have sought parity in respective diplomatic presence. Discussions are ongoing on the modalities,” Arindam Bagchi said.

On Khalistani elements in US, UK

The MEA said that it has raised the matter of the presence of Khalistani elements in the US and the UK.

The MEA said, “We have been taking up concerns about the security of our diplomats, and our premises, and people there who are wanted by our security and judicial systems. We will continue to do that. On October 2, there was a protest (in the UK). We have taken up our concerns with the UK authorities.”
