Kapil Sibal files nomination papers as Independent, manages Akhilesh backing
New Delhi
Eminent lawyer and a prominent member of G-23 of Congress dissidents, Kapil Sibal, quit the grand old party dumping the Gandhis.
This brings an end to his over 30-year old association with the Sonia-Rahul family and the Congress party.
After resigning from the Congress he filed nomination for Rajya Sabha election as independent and with the backing of the Samajwadi Party.
"After 30 years, it was time to quit and work as an Independent candidate. I would not speak against Congress at any point. I have a good relationship with many opposition leaders. My wife says we have a connection with Uttar Pradesh," he said trying to justify his move to associate with Samajwadi Party.
Sibal earlier represented Chandi Chowk Parliamentary constituency as well.
"I told Akhilesh ji that I wanted to go to the Rajya Sabha and to support me as an Independent candidate."
A part of the G-23 leaders, Kapil Sibal has been vocal about his grievances within the party.
Sibal was part of the group that had sought an organisational overhaul in the Congress, Sibal's tenure as Congress' Rajya Sabha MP ends in July.
Sibal has been vocal in his criticism of the Congress leadership.
