India has never followed diktat from abroad: Putin's message to Trump at SPIEF

Russian President, speaking at the SPIEF 2026, underlined that sovereignty and sovereign decision-making can never be contested, as he sent a stern message to Trump on attempts to pressure India to scale back its cooperation with Russia.

Putin asserted that India has never followed any diktat from abroad, sending a stern message to Donald Trump amid US attempts to pressure Delhi to scale back its cooperation with Moscow.

Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which was moderated by India Today, Putin underlined that sovereignty and sovereign decision-making can never be contested.

"Naturally, India, which has never followed any diktat from abroad, or the People's Republic of China. Sovereignty and sovereign decision-making can never be contested," Putin said.

His response was to a question about the economic isolation of Russia.

Putin flags contradictions in Kyiv’s position

Putin says Ukraine’s attacks inflict “a certain damage” on Russia, while also pointing to what he describes as contradictions in Kyiv’s position, noting that it seeks weapons from the United States but does not want Washington to act as a guarantor in peace talks. He adds that Russia does not see threats to its economy and expresses confidence that the country will remain attractive to investment.

Plenary Session in St Petersburg: I don’t see any reason to meet Zelenskyy, says Putin

Putin says a Russian businessman met Zelenskyy in Kyiv and claims he requested a meeting, but adds that he does not see the need for such a meeting at this stage, arguing that what is required instead are lasting peace agreements.

Putin responds to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s open letter on talks, saying that while Zelenskyy referred to his age, the key issue is not age but the ability to work. He also says he is grateful to Trump, but adds that there is still some work to be done.

Putin says it is wrong that Ukraine made their talks public and reiterates that he does not understand why Ukraine does not want to see the Trump administration as a guarantor of peace talks, suggesting that such involvement could serve as a stabilising factor in negotiations.
