One of the biggest shocks in World Cup history :::: Cape Verde draw with Spain :::: With a population of 550,000 people, Cape Verde is second-smallest country ever to reach World Cup finals

Cape Verde draw with Spain in one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history:

Cape Verde have held European champions Spain to a goalless draw in one of the most shocking results in World Cup history.

With a population of around 550,000 people, Cape Verde is the second-smallest country ever to reach the men’s World Cup finals.

But in their first match at the tournament, they held the 2010 champions Spain (rated as second best team) to a 0-0 draw, thanks in no small part to a heroic performance by their 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha.

Yamal - 19 (youngest player in the tournament)

Notably

Lamine Yamal’s 2026 World Cup debut ends in a 0-0 draw for Spain in an inefficient offense showdown.

With Luis de la Fuente at the helm, Spain have established as one of the most competitive national teams.

Relying on a possession-based style and high pressing, they have managed to dominate their opponents in the past.

Lamine Yamal had fitness issues but was fielded at the fag end and still sadly for Spain, nothing substantial was achieved.
