"We are heading in a wrong direction and there can be a point of no return…," cautions West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar after visiting camps in Assam where 'BJP workers and supporters' from West Bengal after pos-poll violence have taken shelter.

"History will judge the bureaucracy of West Bengal, police and administration… This is such an issue, where nobody has the right to play politics,” Mr Dhankar told reporters.

“I do not understand till when will the tussle with the Governor, central forces, central government continue. I have seen that in Cooch Behar. I feel ashamed to speak to you on this.

The people fear the police now, of going to the police station. The police is fearful of the ruling party karyakartas.

Guv Dhankhar interacted with those who had taken refuge in a camp at Agomoni area of Dhubri in BJP-ruled Assam.

“Nothing can be more shameful for us than people of West Bengal taking shelter in other states,” he said.

“Even the media did not do anything. It is an open secret who the perpetrators were,” he said.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh said it is high time the fourth estate discharges its duties and show how sorry and gory state of affairs it has turned out to be.

The post-poll violence has been of unprecedented scale but the Mamata government has sought to make light of the entire saga and even objected to Governor's travel programmes.

In the just concluded polls, in Jalpaiguri region of North Bengal, the BJP could pick up 21 seats out of total 27.

There are four major districts - Jhargram (4 Seats), South 24 Pargana (31 Seats), Purba Bardhaman (16 Seats) and Kolkata (11 Seats). the BJP score was a neat zero. This despite the saffron party having done well in these areas during 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The BJP score in Jungle Mahal areas was 17 out of total 51 seats.

In a tweet, the Governor informed that he will visit post-poll violence affected areas of Nandigram on May 15, 2021.

He will also perform Puja at Janakinath Temple.

Dhankar sought to draw a comparison between civil servants and top police officials in West Bengal and Assam.

“In Assam, a number of senior administrative and police officials were present according to the protocol when I reached. But in Cooch Behar, officials of similar ranks were absent during my visit. There is a stark difference,” he said.

Meanwhile, Banashree Khanra, chief of Trinamool-run Nandigram gram panchayat and mother of the TMC's Keshpur MLA (also a minister) Seuli Saha, has resigned after a no-confidence motion was brought against her.

Banashree Khanra said she had resigned from the post as TMC has accused her of being “inactive” during the elections.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had suffered a defeat in Nandigram against her onetime lieutenant Suvendu Adhikari.
