Church leaders belonging to the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) were ambushed by the Zeliangrong United Front–Kamson faction and Meitei militants between Kotzim and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district.
According to initial reports, Rev. V. Sitlhou, a TBA leader and former General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention, is said to have been killed in the attack.
The church leaders were returning to Kangpokpi from Churachandpur after attending the United Baptist Convention (UBC) Conference in Chiengkonpang, Lamka, when they were ambushed en route.
Several others also sustained injuries. The number of fatalities and injuries has yet to be confirmed at the time of filing this report.
The injured include Rev. S.M. Haopu, Rev. Hekai Simte, Rev. Kaigoulun, Rev. Paothang, Pastor Paogou, Lelen (driver), and Goumang (driver). They were travelling in two vehicles when they were ambushed, sources said.
In the meantime, the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has urged Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to defer his proposed visit to Kuki-Zo populated areas until conditions become demonstrably “conducive”.
The chief minister is slated to visit Churachandpur district, a Kuki-Zo populated district, on May 15.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, KIM stated that the prevailing situation in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts stands on a materially different footing and such a visit could act as a flashpoint, potentially disturbing the already precarious law and order situation.
