NSCN-IM general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah is on move.
Experts now say the aging militant leader's travails and speeches -- especially the one at Somdal on Oct 22 raise wider questions about the appeal of charismatic populists who wield simple answers in the fragmented Naga polity.
Moreover, the politics of Manipur is very much complex. Thanks to flamboyance of Muivah; can Kukis be now compelled to share bread with Meiteis ?
Even PM Narendra Modi's detractors will agree, the Prime Minister is an ambitious man who wants his name to be recorded in history as someone who has done a few miracles to India. Personally, I do not believe all of those superlative descriptions.
But Time has helped him as well. The Modi government has achieved a few milestones we never thought were possible.
But he remains a weak performer in a Big Picture scenario in north east -- especially Manipur and Naga peace talks.
Modi does not have the luxury of losing out ensuing Assam elections. Given today's ground reality -- Himanta Biswa Sarma and also the Lotus party need certain drastic game-changers.
The peace between Meiteis and Kukis is now a long journey.
Therefore, there has been talk about Naga Solution. Muivah has done a long term damage. Or things were planned .... more the hardliner stance is displayed or spoken out; is it possible that the likes of V S Atem and his team now feel that things are going out of their grip.
In overall scenario, the central government has to be "little tough" and push things.
The flamboyance of Muivah could have given a signal to Kukis and Zomi people that perhaps the Meitei-Naga bonhomie has been a crucial element in all these. Thus, whether Kukis are realising that confronting Meitei to the hilt and in the process of isolating themselves from Manipur capital and governance system has actually harmed Zomi and Kuki people.
In such a scenario, the BJP leaders in Manipur and in Delhi can work to carry Kukis alongside their long-term journey.
Manipur BJP leaders want an early installation of a popular government. For them the only issue left is ... the new face that will be acceptable to all. Former chief minister N Biren Singh had resigned in February but technically he remained as the legislature party leader in the suspended House.
But for BJP high command; the issues are complex. There is no improvement of situation.
A chief minister given freehand despite May 2023 violence has not been able to deliver. If Kukis are apprehensive of Meiteis so much that they even do not travel from Imphal airport; when it comes to N Biren Singh -- they simply hate him.
However, a realisation is dawning among Kukis that the rope should not be stretched beyond a point. The Meitei-Naga bond is more of a strategic and compulsive nature. But it now has the potential to isolate Kukis further.
A new dawn begins every day, we wake up. It is a natural phenomenon. But with regard statecraft; -- it will be the biggest lie to claim that well, give us the moon and we can replace the old chaos upside down.
The Kukis - therefore - must also own up their share of negativity and utter failure. If Centre allows installation of a new popular ministry; the Kukis will do well to join it. Rather the smart move will be to place their demands at an appropriate forum and at an appropriate scale.
Should they demand deputy chief ministership?
