S C Jamir was awarded the third-highest Civilian Award in India, Padma Bhusan in 2020 for his work in public affairs.
Born October 17, 1931, Jamir was appointed by Jawaharlal Nehru as his Parliamentary Secretary between ...
May 5, 1962 to January 15, 1966.
He has served as the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Governor of Maharashtra, Governor of Gujarat & Governor Odisha and Goa. He also served as Deputy Railway Minister under Indira Gandhi.
Age is slowly telling. He has almost retired and occasionally has to consult medicos. But his memory as sharp as elephant and his curiosity about life and politics is phenomenal.
During last tele call with him as I enquired about his toothache; he rather surprised me asking - "What will happen in Bihar ?"
I said something. He added: "I know the real issue there is caste factor".
In his own words - "I am the most harassed Naga politician and also the most surviving". He told me this 1993 when we worked for a now defunct newspaper 'Nagaland Times'.
S Chubatoshi Jamir is still around and politically updated. He still exchange messages about political ups, downs and controversies in Maharashtra.
So much aura about his style and politics - even in 2025, there are Naga leaders
as well as people among Delhi mandarins and Jamir's fan club who insist - only Jamir can take up matters with PM Narendra Modi 'sincerely, candidly and frankly'.
Well, he could have easily become the Perfectionist.
Jamir's comments on Narendra Modi (2021)
"The Prime Minister has the guts, that is an advantage. The Naga issue has its complexities. I have seen many Prime Ministers, but one good quality with him is, he takes decisions and it is very important".
Jamir's speech for the Military-Civil Fusion 2025 organised by Assam Rifles in coordination with the Ministry of Defence made a few sensational points :
Among other things he said:
"The practical reality is that the underground movement in Nagaland has lost all credibility and confidence and is pitifully reduced to an instrument of unbridled lot, naked plunder ..... No wonder the common man is disillusioned and distraught".
***
"Should we have to dream a bright future for the people of Nagaland, a total overhauling of the entire systems would be required where joint efforts of military and civil shall be required.
*** If Nagaland is geographically, politically and constitutionally an integral part of the Indian union, why should she suffer too long under the grip of secessionists elements".

"We married in 1958 ... The moment I saw her, I told my friends ... I want to marry her" |
In reply to a question during an interview with me in December 2023, Jamir referred to his only meeting with NSCN-IM leader Thuingaleng Muivah and described it as a "good meeting no doubt".
Elaborating further, the former Chief Minister said,
"For the first time I met Muivah on that day.
Our discussions were in the presence of his Kilonsers and Ao Senden Office bearers. When I provoked Muivah for his inability to find solution with the Govt of India even after more than six to seven years of negotiation, may be out of anger or probably his conscious might have pricked him and he said that “I have asked the Govt of India not to put any condition so that I will also not raise the issue of sovereignty.”
I think as a Naga he spoke out the truth".
Jamir also said, " .....Furthermore neither sovereignty nor Integration appear in the two official Agreements between two groups of the underground.
My first and last meeting (with Muiavah) was in Delhi and while departing from the scene while shaking hands;
.... Muivah told me, “Jamir so we may not meet again”.
I too replied "no need because I told you everything during the discussions" and then everybody laughed.
