'Oil Diplomacy figures' ::: Modi reaffirms India's "consistent position for peaceful settlement" of Russia-Ukraine conflict : Tele talks with Zelenskyy crucial ::: Time for Bharat to emerge "trusted and indispensable"

Ukraine Prez says -- "It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the right signals to Moscow".

India's foreign ministry issued a statement on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tele conversation with President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy wherein it was stated that President Zelenskyy shared his views on the recent developments related to Ukraine.

The statement said - the Prime Minister thanked President Zelenskyy and reaffirmed "India’s steadfast and consistent position for peaceful settlement of the conflict and support for efforts aimed at earliest restoration of peace".

PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to extend all possible support in this regard.

The leaders also reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Importantly, both the leaders agreed to remain in touch.

Now it is being argued and debated whether in times to come whether India will be known as merely indispensable, or as 'indispensable and trusted'.

According to Nirupama Rao, ex foreign secretary author of the book 'The Fractured Himalaya: India Tibet China 1949-1962' ---- The former wins respect for its usefulness; the latter commands allegiance for its constancy.

In a tweet, PM Modi wrote --  "I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict.

India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine".

Not long ago several world leaders including Zelenskyy believed that India was is a better position to play a much significant role to bring an end to the Ukraine-Russia conflict because the Prime Minister Modi had good working relations with both President Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

In his missive on X/Twitter, President Zelenskyy wrote:

"We also discussed in detail the sanctions against Russia. I noted that it is necessary to limit the export of Russian energy, particularly oil, to reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war.

It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow.

Though Zelenskyy spoke about a possible face-to-face meeting between him and Modi in September (when UN General Assembly meets); there was no such reference from the Indian side.

In August 2024 Narendra Modi became first Indian PM to visit Ukraine.

He hugged Zelenskyy and kept hand on his shoulder.

Notably,  Zelenskyy had criticised PM Modi for hugging Russia's Putin in July 2024.

Zelenskyy was particularly critical, saying he was "disappointed to see the leader of the world's largest democracy hug the world's most bloody criminal in Moscow". Modi's visit to Moscow also coincided with the bombing of a children's hospital in Kyiv, further angering the West and Ukraine.

Around six weeks prior to Ukraine visit, Modi's hug and firm handshake with Russian President Vladimir Putin became one of the lasting images from his trip to Moscow.

Modi had come in for criticism from the West as well as the Ukraine President.

Both President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Modi had also visited a memorial for children killed in the war.
