Does it mean Rajnath Singh will be the new Vice President of India ?
Does it also mean the obvious -- a subtle message to RSS leadership in Nagpur ?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has applauded his trusted friend and advisor and made reference to Amit Shah's “landmark” achievements as the Home Minister -- like abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 -- in just two months and five days of becoming the Home Minister.
It is also true Shah deserves credit for the anti-Maoist operations and the success in “uniting the NDA parties”.
At the NDA meet, the Prime Minister congratulated Amit Shah on becoming the longest-serving Home Minister of the country.
Notably, he added - "it was just the beginning”.
“Today, I want to congratulate Amit Shahji for becoming the country’s longest-serving home minister. Earlier, our Advaniji held that record and now he (Shah) has surpassed it,” Modi reportedly told the closed-door meeting.
Amit Shah’s 'record' - notably - coincided with the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Prime Minister also said -- “Let me tell you, this is just the beginning .....We have a long way to go from here”.
These words could have been chosen carefully by the Prime Minister who knows the importance of timing and also the power of use of right words !!
After Jagdeep Dhankhar's unceremonious exit as the vice president, speculation was kicked off on possible elevation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the new chairman of Rajya Sabha and the Vice President.
This would make things easier to grant No. 2 position in the union cabinet to Amit Shah and also designate him as the Deputy Prime Minister.
This could bring an end to nationwide and also an international speculation on who would succeed PM Modi.
Will the entire process (some truth and some speculated) ultimately help BJP finalise its new president. Apparently, the RSS has vetoed the name of Union Minister(s) Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav.
Both these ministers are considered very close to Amit Shah.
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had in June stressed on the need for leaders to step aside gracefully after a certain age to make way for the new generation. This brought the spotlight on the BJP’s unwritten retirement age of 75 enforced by Modi-Shah ostensibly to sideline many party stalwarts.
Bhagwat’s statement should also be seen as an attempt by the RSS to tighten its hold over the BJP.
The election of new BJP president is pending and it has not been finalised essentially because a cold war is on between Nagpur and PM Modi-Amit Shah duo. Incumbent BJP national president J P Nadda had snubbed Arvind Kejriwal in 2024 when the then Delhi CM said Modi will have to retire by September 2025.
This was also seen in the media as an "insider" work from Uttar Pradesh. No wonder, BJP did poorly in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
As for RSS swayamsevaks, no RSS chief has stepped down at 75.
