First trip since 2019 .... In Trump's "Tariff era" .... PM Narendra Modi to visit China for SCO summit on Aug 31

If the proposed trip materialises, it will be a special one.

Xi Jinping had himself stayed away from G-20 Summit in New Delhi in 2023

In June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the Defence Ministers’ meeting of the SCO in Qingdao, China, where he refused to sign a document that, could have diluted India’s stand on terrorism and the Pahalgam terror attack.

Due to divergence on the issue of terrorism, the SCO decided not to issue a joint statement.

Namo's visit will come at a time when Donald Trump has targeted the BRICS nations especially India for buying oil from Russia and for what the US President claims is a grouping that challenges the hegemony of the dollar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Tianjin, China, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit from Aug 31 to Sept 1.

This will also be his first visit to China since 2019.

PM Modi's visit also comes at a time when Donald Trump has targeted the Brics nations for buying oil from Russia and for what the US President claims is a grouping that challenges the hegemony of the dollar.

In recent months, China, which holds the SCO chair, and its "all-weather friend" Pakistan tried to divert the attention from terrorism in the SCO document, skipping any mention of the Pahalgam attack.

However, the document mentioned Balochistan, a veiled attempt to accuse India of creating unrest in the Pakistani province.

This will be also Modi's first visit to China since the Galwan clash of 2020.

Discussions with SCO member countries will cover regional security, terrorism, and trade. Efforts will be made to restore stability and dialogue in India-China relations.

There is a possibility of informal meetings with Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit.

Earlier, in October 2024, PM Modi and Xi Jinping met at the BRICS summit in Kazan.

Following that, efforts to reduce border tensions between the two countries gained momentum.

Lately, the RIC dynamism is seeing special and enhanced thrust as NSA Ajit Doval has also landed in Moscow.

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is also scheduled to visit Russia on Aug 27.
