China makes it official.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's China visit almost confirmed !!
This will also be Modi's first visit to China since 2019.
On reports in Indian media that Modi may visit China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakum says:
"China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year.
Leaders of over 20 countries including all member states of the SCO and heads of 10 international organizations will attend relevant events.
The SCO Tianjin Summit will be the largest summit in scale since the establishment of the SCO.
China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit.
"We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness," the spokesman said.
In June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the Defence Ministers’ meeting of the SCO in Qingdao, China, where he refused to sign a document that, could have diluted India’s stand on terrorism and the Pahalgam terror attack.
Due to divergence on the issue of terrorism, the SCO decided not to issue a joint statement.
Modi's visit will come at a time when Donald Trump has targeted the BRICS nations especially India for buying oil from Russia and for what the US President claims is a grouping that challenges the hegemony of the dollar.
If the proposed trip materialises, it will be a special one.
Xi Jinping had himself stayed away from G-20 Summit in New Delhi in 2023
