Guided by 'vote bank' politics, Congress stands divided on Hijab in Karnataka

New Delhi

A party whose politics is guided by self seeking vote bank agenda, the Congress in Karnataka stand divided on Hijab row.

This of course displays only sheer opportunism.

A BJP leader from Karnataka and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said "....There is a division within the Congress party itself on Hijab. There is one group that feels that a pro-Hijab stance must not be taken and that doing so would result in political damage".

The Congress which always plays lip service to 'secularism' and instead promotes a fake agenda

of the same - rather called 'sickularism - is now caught in a dilemma over 'supporting'  Muslim community.

Muslims make up nearly 10 percent of Karnataka’s population and hence the Congress leaders presume

they can play smart games keeping Muslims happy on one side and also keep wooing Hindus.

Karnataka, now under BJP rule, goes to the polls in April-May 2023.

The BJP leaders in the state have already tried to corner the Congress party.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, an import from Janata Dal, has said earlier this month

"at the behest of the party’s Muslim leaders" that restrictions imposed on Hijab in schools and colleges

were intended to curb the Muslim girl education.

The Congress party subsequently went silent over the issue as the BJP made a counter-attack saying the

Congress leaders were behind instigating the minority community girls.

Not long ago, a Muslim Congress legislator Zameer Ahmed, spoke in "favour of the Hijab" as being essential

in Islam but he was "pulled up" and even forced to tender an apology by the party leadership.

“We have asked everyone not to comment on the issue," KPCC president D K Shivakumar said.

The Karnataka Congress has rather now decided to reach out to the BJP government in the state and especially Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to resolve the issue so that it can keep its Muslim vote bank in good humour and also win over the support base of Hindus.

The party has also authorised its Muslim leaders – Saleem Ahmed, U T Khader, Zameer, Tanvir Sait,

Rizwan Arshad and N A Haris to take up the matter with Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai and also

Education Minister B C Nagesh.

In 2018 assembly elections, the Congress came down to 40 from 122 while the BJP strength went up

from 40 (in 2013) to 104.

JD(S) of H D Deve Gowda and his won H D Kumaraswamy had won 37 seats.

Indian nationals and students advised to leave Ukraine 'temporarily'

New Delhi

Fresh advisory has been issued by Indian authorities in Ukraine urging all Indian nationals whose stay is 'not deemed essential' and all Indian students to leave the country temporarily.

"Indian students are advised to also get in touch with respective student contractors for updates on charter flights and also continue to follow Embassy Facebook, website and Twitter for any update," a communique from the Embassy in Kyiv said.

The 'advisory' also said that, "In view of continued tensions in Ukraine, all Indian nationals whose stay is not deemed essential and all Indian students are advised to leave Ukraine temporarily".

It further said - "Available commercial flights, charter flights may be availed for travel for orderly and timely departure".

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said the extension of military exercises by Russiashows the world is on the brink of 'war'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ally Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko have extended military drills which were due to end on Sunday, BBC report said.

A statement cited the "deterioration of the situation" in east Ukraine as one reason for keeping an estimated 30,000 Russian troops in Belarus.

The move will add to fears that Russia plans an invasion of Ukraine, which shares a long border with Belarus.

Western leaders have accused Moscow of seeking a pretext to send in troops.

Russia has denied any plan to 'invade' UKraine.

The families of Indian Embassy officials in Ukraine are also likely to move back to India.
