Following a hunger strike which had been going on for 14 days, CM Sangma arrived in Tura from Shillong on Monday to hold talks with the protesting civil bodies including the A’chik Conscious Holistic Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) at the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in Tura.

Out of 1508, at least 520 Meiteis quit Mizoram

Aizawl

Of an estimated 1508 Meiteis residing in Mizoram till last week, at least 520 of them "left Mizoram"by Sunday, official sources said in Aizawl on Monday.

On Monday, July 24, there was no flight between Aizawl and Imphal, but 16 Meiteis left Mizoramduring the day by separate flights to Guwahati, Shillong and Kolkata.

The State DGP Anil Shukla told a news conference that while Meiteis left the state, it was "voluntary"and "there was no case of any Meitei citizen approaching police in any manner with the complaintthey they are under threats or so".

In fact, the Mizoram government found itself embarrassed after Meiteis started leaving the statefollowing a statement from a body of former underground militants after the controversial video footageshowing naked girls being paraded went viral on social media and internet.

On Sunday, 59 Meiteis left Mizoram by an Aizawl-Imphal-Silchar Alliance Airlines flight.

Some Meiteis have left on the road towards Silchar in Assam.

"We are providing round the clock security and vigil for the Meitei community people," DGP Shukla said.

Mizoram capital is geared up for a Solidarity Rally on Tuesday (July 25th) organised by the NGO CoordinationCommittee. Security measures have been beefed up in the town.

The BJP in Mizoram, state's ruling party MNF, Congress and another political outfit the Zoram People'sMovement (ZPM) extended their support to the rally.

Rice eaters, get to the basics - food prices may shoot up

New Delhi

We are into turmoil. Part of these in India could be blamed on the government
and official systems and and partly to rains, floods and related problems including hoarding indulged by the traders in the 'killing season' of shortage and supply issues.

Indians love rice mostly. But importantly, India is also the world’s largest rice exporter, accounting for more than 40 percent of global shipments. Recently New Delhi has ordered a ban on non-basmati white rice exports to curb domestic inflation.

The rice production has taken a hit due to the unexpected weather changes such as heavy monsoon rains in rice-producing states in the north and deficit rainfall in other parts of the country.

The situation offers more challenging times to the Prime Minister as we are already into the election year. By June next year, the polls will be over and the scoresheet will be ready for all to read.

Consumers in the domestic market are already paying 11.5 percent more for rice than a year ago, says the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food.

The country exported a whooping 10.3 million tonnes of non-basmati white rice last year.

India's Northeast is mostly based on an agrarian economy with more than 70 percent of the population engaged in the agriculture sector. Paddy is the main crop of the Northeast as it is the principal food crop of the region.

But the picturesque land and rice-eating communities, over 200 ethnic groups, have only about 2.27% of the total rice area and can share only 1.96% of the total rice production in the country.

Blame it on the Government of India for everything, but it's a harsh reality, northeast India looks upon towards New Delhi to feed the region and the people.

The region has seldom thought of sincerely trying to solve the problem of low yield.  It is also true, the wider recommendation of agricultural technology nor the use of a single technology or variety can resolve the crisis overnight.

Sources say international sales of Indian rice soared by 35% in June, contributing to a 3 percent rise in domestic prices.

Importantly, Thailand and Vietnam, respectively the world’s second and third-largest rice exporters, have also experienced rises in the prices of their broken rice in recent times.

As it is, perhaps it is well known that Global food supplies have been hit by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

After the export ban on rice, the Modi government may even consider measures to arrest the rise in the prices of pulses and wheat.
