Known for his strong ground-level intelligence network and expertise in counter-terror operations, Dixit has handled several sensitive assignments within the Intelligence Bureau, including Left-Wing Extremism and cross-border infiltration.
Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), taking charge of India's premier domestic intelligence agency at a time of evolving internal security challenges.
A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Dixit's appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
He succeeds the outgoing IB Director Tapan Deka after the completion of the latter's tenure.
Tapan Kumar Deka (born 25 February 1963) has been serving as the 28th Director of the Intelligence Bureau of India.
Deka belongs to Himachal Pradesh cadre of the 1988 batch.
Deka mostly worked with the Intelligence Bureau of India. He was seen as a close aide of NSA Ajit Doval.
Mahesh Dixit's extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to shape the agency's approach to tackling Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, radicalisation and narco-terror networks as he takes over the country's top domestic intelligence post.
